Ugliest incident in the NBA since The Brawl in Detroit. Yet another terrible black eye for the League. What a shame. A tragedy; an AMERICAN TRAGEDY!!!
Whew. Glad we got that BS out the way. Now, let's get real: Who were the winners and losers in the fight?
The Winners
Nate Robinson: That pile drive he did on J.R. Smith was simply beautiful. Almost brought a tear to my eye. It reminded me of the time another Knick (Chris Childs?) flipped a Miami Heat player (can't recall who) into the crowd in one of those crazy, low-scoring, Knick-Heat playoff battles from nearly 10 years ago. Great job, Mr. Robinson.
Jared Jeffries: Dude was ready to put a hurt on somebody, and were it not for the phalanx of arms holding him back, serious damage would have been done. I didn't know you got down like that, Jared.
The Fans: Let's be honest, we love this stuff. As long as no one gets hurt (which is almost always the case), the fisticuffs add to everyone's enjoyment of the game. The media will get their panties in a twist over the incident for the next few weeks, but that's only because they have to act that way. When it comes right down to it, that was just good ol' entertainment.
The Losers
Mardy Collins: For that unnecessary cheap shot on J.R. Smith as the game was winding down. I figure, HE figured that by showing a little toughness, former Bad Boy and current coach Isiah Thomas would look his way a bit more next time he needs a fresh body off the bench. Unfortunately, the only person who's gonna be giving Marty a second look is fine-happy Stu Jackson.
Carmelo Anthony: Being a big Anthony supporter, I gotta say that 'Melo let me down tonight. First, he sucker punches a guy, and then, from the looks of things on the ESPN.com video, he ran AWAY from Jared Jeffries! I thought you were from Baltimore, homey?!?!!?!?!?! The cast of The Wire would not be impressed.
The Knicks: 123-100 (there was a game tonight, right?)

IT'M REALLY EMBARASSED AS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE TO SEE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR EXIBITED BY QUOTE UN QUOTE ROLE MODELS.THESE TYPE OF INCIDENTS WILL ONLY FOSTER
THE STEREO TYPES THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE WHITE PAYING FANS ALREADY HAVE OF YOUNG AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES WHEATHER IT BE IN SPORTS OR SOCIETY THAT YOUNG AFRICAN MALES ARE OUT OF CONTROL.PERHAPS IF THIS WERE THE NHL FIGHTING WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE.DOUBLE STANDARD
" A tragedy; an AMERICAN TRAGEDY!!!"
So true... expect a week's worth of media grandstanding after this one. The best will be on the now-unlistenable Dan Patrick show. The fight will be top billing until Iverson gets traded.
re: The Miami/Knicks fight: are you thinking of P.J. Brown flipping Charlie Ward? I don't really remember Childs being involved in many of those fights.
In defense of Carmello.... every time you throw a punch in Stern's NBA, it's like writing $100,000 cheque.
Mr. Anthony you will expeelled from the NBA!
you know what's hilarious to me? had this happened in baseball, hockey, nascar(!!!), or any other white sport, no one would've batted an eyelash. i find that simply awesome.
The players should be hit where it hurts their money. They should be fined a good portion of their yearly pay for this.
Who types out the words quote unquote? Isn't that what " " is for?
I agree with Delancy. I am a teacher in an alternative high school. Our students have been sent to us because they have acted violently in school. They each have learning and emotional disabilities, and are all currently on probation or parole. Because they have been identified as Special Ed, they cannot be expelled. The majority are African-American and Hispanic males. They all think they are going to be NBA stars or rappers, though they do not play team sports or take music lessons. They think they are going to be "discovered" shooting hoops in the local park, playing beats on the street corner, or posting lyrics (if you can call them that) on their MySpace websites. These young men look up to these ball players, and when they see them behaving so badly, it only reinforces to them that violence is an acceptable way to solve conflicts, however trivial they may be. Where are the good role models in the African American and Hispanic communities to teach them right from wrong? Or is there just too much anger and a sense of hopelessness from centuries of knowing that they will never truly be accepted as a part of the dominant White American culture? It is very sad to me that young men who have "made it" continue to act as if they are still thugs on the street. It's time to step up and take responsibility for our failures as a society by keeping blacks in the permanent underclass.
WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!they are just a bunch of overpaid arrogant self-centered entertainers and the fans that support them deserve what they get---Thank tou very much!!!
Get a life people these gus are all human, this kind of thing happen as long as we can stablelize it before it get out of control it is ok. This is all part of the game.
mutoni...enough of the racist baloney ("had this happened in baseball, hockey, nascar(!!!), or any other white sport, no one would've batted an eyelash"). In the other sports there have indeed been significant crackdowns with heavy fines, suspensions, and rules changes, but obviously because they are (in your opinion) white sports...you must not watch and pay attention to them because they are not a black sport.
This was a disgrace no matter who was involved. Childish, boorish behavior, and it was certainly was not entertainment. The overwhelming majority of fans neither want nor appreciate watching such ludicrous taking offense as the Knicks did and expressly stated the hard foul is why this even occurred. The additional "oneupmanship" after the hard foul was there for all to see, nothing more than schoolyard antics of non-professionals.
nate robinson a winner? What are you smoking Mutoni? He's the biggest loser of the bunch on this.
melo is a puss. sucker punches are BS. Lil Nate is a scrappy guy, i wouldn't want to fight him. melo, on the other hand, I could take him minus all the sucker punch BS.
UP the fines !!!!! These overpaid thugs should feel the pinch of a real fine. 40% of remaing games with no pay during suspension. That ought to wake these sleepwalkers up!
i'm thinking the nba should start fining the fans for ignorance.
are you kidding me? they make a big deal out of nothing. Of course they shouldnt be fighting, but for goodness sake, in the NHL it's like ufc championship, and everyone just talks about how great the fight was?
give me a break!!!
Basically, everyone involved is an idiot, this also has nothing to do with race so stop bringing it up, people get fined if they assauly someone regardless of colour, race, or the sport they play in. Firstly, no game should be thrown especially considering the amount of money these players are making. Isaih Thomas should grow up and learn to take a loss in style or maybe just play better, and not have that problem at all. Secondly, "proffessional fouls" are just stupid, Mardy Collins is a coward who was pissed he was being beaten and took it out on J.R. Smith. The foul was a) totally unneccesary, they were losing anyways it did not help his team at all b) incrdibly immature, kids in minor sports have more control than this jackoff. He is also, frankly the biggest idiot of them all.
Chris Childs bitchslapped Kobe Braynt a few years ago, got off two chin shots, Kobe flailed around a bit, is THAT what you're thinking of? Remember that, TDD?
your winners and losers were correct. nate was definitely ballin there. or should i say BRAWLIN
