So the man you know as Shoals has come up with a brilliant FanHouse feature: Getting to know a somewhat obscure, yet relevant, NBA player. It'll be fact-filled and fun. Here's a guide:
Every week, the FanHouse will spotlight an NBA player who has rescued himself from obscurity over the last few games. They may be unknowns clamoring for attention, bench guys breaking out, or prospects suddenly coming into their own; either way, you don't know them, you should, and now you will.
Who: David Lee. I've been talking up his rebounding prowess for a minute. The guy collects rebounds like I used to collect baseball cards. And with noted chuckers Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis jacking like there's no tomorrow - let's throw in Jamal Crawford, too - Lee is a busy man. Amazingly, Lee, a 6-foot-9 white kid from Missouri, is the 7th best rebounder in the NBA this season, snatching 10.4 a game. Players he secures more rebounds than: Ben Wallace, Tim Duncan and Yao Ming. Lee plays fewer minutes than all of them, too.
Early Years: Sure, he was a McDonald's All-American. And he won a high school dunk contest (that's video of him beating out skywalking James White of Cincinnati). But perhaps cooler than both is that Lee, a lefty, broke his arm in his younger days, and learned to play with his right hand. So he can take you either way, which is something not many power forwards can do.
NBA: As the last pick in the first round of the 2005 draft, not much was expected. As least not compared to the Knicks other draft picks. Far more hype was heaped upon tiny Nate Robinson and Arizona stud Channing Frye. It's still far to early to project outcomes of the trio, but right now, I'd say Lee has performed best. If there is a 6-9 player who outhustles Lee, I have not yet seen him. Frye needs to get tougher, and Nate Robinson needs to chill out.
Potential Problems: Thought I'd never say this, but there's a glut of talent on the Knicks frontline. Lee (11 points, 10 rebounds per game) is going to have to fight for time with Frye, small forward Jared Jeffries, and center Eddy Curry. Won't bother mention $35 million man Jerome James, who is downright awful.
Ladies Love Cool Dave: Back in March of this year, the New York Post ran a random sighting of Lee on a date with fetching Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne V. He does the dirty work under the hoop, and he has dated a swimsuit model. Must be nice to be David Lee.

Here's to hoping he gets traded to a team where he can play 35 minutes a game. Although he isn't the person to demand a trade or anything like that, he showed his displeasure with the fact that he was going to the bench with Jared Jeffries coming back from injury (This was whlie Frye was still injured aswell. I don't recall exactly what he said, but I think it was "Let's just say I don't see it as a compliment").
I think his contract also doesn't end until after the 2009/2010 season? And Thomas probably won't trade him, but maybe he'll be out of after the season and a new GM will completely remake the team. So yeah, he'll probably be stuck on NY's bench for awhile. :(
Been a fan from him since his college days at UF (I live in Gainesville). Was sad to see him go, could you imagine how good the UF team last year would have been with a four-man front court of Horford, Noah, Lee, and Brewer? Would outrebound teams by 40 every game, haha.

Lee's not going to be traded.
Whoever thinks that with more minutes that he will get 20 points and 20 rebounds is downright ignorant. He is not going to another team nor will he demand a trade. Everybody in NYC loves David Lee, and he has said several times that he wants to finish his career in NY and I hope he does so. He is an amazing spark plug off the bench and the fact of the matter is that he gets most of his points off tip ins and put backs and hardly from jumpshots and NEVER outside of the 15 ft. range.
That being said, I love David Lee and I have his jersey. I just don't think that the Knicks will get fair value at this moment if the Knicks trade him since 1. he's not a starter 2.can't shoot 3. and nobody outside of NYC and UF area really knows who this kid is. If he gets a jump shot his stock would sky rocket, but then there's no way the Knicks will trade him then. Once some inexcusable salaries get taken off of the Knicks' books like Maurice Taylor, Jalen Rose, Jerome Williams, and Allan Houston get taken off, then the Knicks are not going to be the laughing stock any more. Zeke is doing a ridiculous job with a team that he's been handed (except for not protecting the draft pick with Chicago... that was stupid... oh yeah AND Jerome James)http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/knicks/archives/2006/10/it_was_the_best.html
