2007 NBA Dunk Contest: Free James White!

With the 2007 All-Star Game coming up in Vegas, we're going to start to hear talk of who's entering the Slam Dunk contest. Last year's dunk contest turned into a sham, with Nate Robinson needing ten thousand attempts to complete is final dunk. The real shame in the NBA Dunk contest losing its sizzle is that the NBA has tons of guys that are capable of putting on a great show in a dunk contest. A lot of the better dunkers such as Kobe, VC, and Jason Richardson are older and more susceptible to injury, so I can understand why they wouldn't want to enter the contest. But what about the young guys? I know LeBron thinks dunk contest are bourgeois, so we probably won't ever see him in the contest, but here's a list of guys that I would love to see in this year's contest:

Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia
Gerald Green, Boston
Rudy Gay, Memphis
Josh Smith, Atlanta
J.R. Smith, Denver
Tyrus Thomas, Chicago
Maurice Evans, L.A. Lakers
Monta Ellis, Golden State
Gerald Wallace, Charlotte
Dwight Howard, Orlando
James White, San Antonio
Amir Johnson, Detroit

Dwight Howard and J.R. Smith have already stated that they would like to be in the contest. Although I think both should be able to hold there own, I'm really hoping that there is a way to see a showdown between Celtics second year star Gerald Green and Spurs rookie and current D-Leaguer, James White. White probably won't be eligible to compete because he is currently in the D-League. But if you haven't seen Green in action, take a look at the videos below for confirmation on how sick this guy is. All I have to say is: windmills, through the legs, and two hand double clutch dunks...all from the free-throw line! (Credit to Shoals and the guys at freedarko for introducing me to this guy)

It's James White's contest to lose if he gets to participate, no one in the league is remotely close to him on being able to put the display he is capable of. He participates, it would be like Vince in 2000.

Truth be told, I'm in Orlando and rooting for Dwight to get in, moreso if he really does have at least one up his sleeve. More than any other dunk, I'd like to see him put the ball on top of the backboard, jump and dunk it on the way down. It's definitely possible for him.

The video clip is of James White; the OP's post suggests the video is of Gerald Green. Just wanted to clarify.

Oh, and I hope they let James White compete. I can't imagine the show he would put on in Vegas..

If James White is in it then it's already over. He will do the same dunk he did in the College dunk contest last year which was a dunk from the free throw line. HE ALSO TOOK IT BETWEEN HIS LEGS AT THE SAME TIME!

stop gassing this dude up! Yall acting lyk White is gunna b the greatest player. yes his dunks r sick but honestly this dude sucks at ball. Nothing worked out for him in the d leage. He was even cut by the Pacers.His verticale leap is 45 inches. same as lebron and even calvin johnson (football player).Dwight Howard wouldnt work out 4 the dunk contest because it all would be just power dunks, wich didnt work out 4 Amare in the contest. Its gunna be a show down between G Green n White.

I actually wrote a letter to the president of the austin toros, asking him to talk to david stern about letting white be in the dunk contest when in the d-league. now that he has been called back up, there is no way he shouldn't be in. hands down the best dunker ive ever seen. a lock to win if he gets the chance.

man.the dunk contest this year wouldn't even be worth watching if gerald green wasn't in it.i mean look at the participants:
Nate Robinson-When he won in '06 it was THE BIGGEST, BIGGEST LET DOWN IN THE NBA'S SLAM DUNK CONTEST HISTORY.PERIOD.he really shouldn't have won and iggy was the real champ,we all know it was a fluke,daylight robbery but at least this year we can hope he gets his ass wooped.
Dwight Howard-lets move on now to big D i'm intrested to see what he is gonna do in the dunk contest but i don't have high hopes.
Tyrus Thomas-This guy should be eliminated from the contest.he is gonna show no passion or effort but do it 4 the money.thats pathetic.people like that shouldn't b in the nba.it saddens me to think there r proffesionall athletes out there like him who say those sorts of things.
Unfortunatley james white wil not be in this years dunk contest.The nba released who will b competing and he is not in it.it sucks.nba fans and viewers of the all star weekend action don't know what their missing out on.all our hopes,prayers and wishes of j-white competing just wern't heard by the powers of the nba.i hope they eliminate tyrus thomas 4 his words and put in James White,that way everyones happy.(maybe except 4 tyrus thomas,but,meh)

I was looking forward to seeing those two go at it this year, but James White is in between the D-League Toros and the SA Spurs, so who knows what his deal is. The NBA needs to know that the Dunk Contest is a show for the fans, not some "free" money like Tyrus Thomas stupidly claimed. WE WANT TO SEE A COMPETITION! Mr Stern, if you are listening, JAMES WHITE. GERALD GREEN. THATS ALL WE NEED! Give Tyrus Thomas' spot to James White, and lets sit back and enjpy the best dunk contest of all time. STAY TUNED!

1) yes, he is A BAD MAN when it comes to throwing it down, but
2) he is a total ham & egger as a ballplayer (I'm probably better than him
3) you haven't seen Air Up There, from And 1 Mix Tape... when you see Flight doing 720s the way this guy does (at 6'2" to boot) then come talk to me.
