Um, probably not. But that sure didn't stop Outsports.com from naming Hardaway to their 2001 list of 'Ten Most Likely Gay Ballers in the NBA'. Seriously! Take a look at whose name is man-sandwiched between MOST LIKELY GAY IN '01 Vince Carter and MOST LIKELY GAY IN '01 Penny Hardaway: 7. Tim Hardaway, Miami. Not too different from the bruthas one might run into at any black gay club on a Saturday night. Opposite of Dale Davis. Not really trying to be tough. Just himself. It should be noted that the list's author, Randy Boyd, clearly states he "has no idea who's gay and not gay in the NBA," and that his list "is pure speculation," "just for fun," and "wishful thinking." But come-on! After listening to Hardaway's comments about John Amaechi, and homosexuality in general, how can you not laugh at this?
Hardaway: I can't stand being around a person knowing that they sleep with someone of the same sex.
Reporter: So if you had a family member who was gay, you're saying, that you would hate them?
Hardaway: Yes. I wouldn't talk to them.
Reporter: But what if you were gay, Timmy?
Hardaway: I'm not gay.
Berry: But what if you were? What if I told you were gay in 2001?
Hardaway: Well, I guess I wouldn't talk to myself then.
Reporter: You wouldn't talk to yourself if you were gay?
Hardaway: Correct. I wouldn't talk to myself; I wouldn't look in the mirror . . . hell, I'd probably punch myself in the face. Repeatedly.
(Thanks to SportsbyBrooks for unearthing this gem!)

He (Hardaway) must have had a bad homosexual experience once or twice in his life to be so hateful. Not only is he stupid but look at how ugly he is. No respectful gay man would give him a second look. That's probably why he is so hateful towards gay people. Tim Hardaway LOOSER!!!

I think this man should keep his racist and bigot comments to himself. He's most likely gay himself, because everybody knows the more homophobic you are the more likely the chances are that you are gay.I think he's probably has some bad sexual experiences with other gay men, and now he's just taking out on anyone that's gay.

Tim went a little too far to get his point across this is true. However, as a society we should have an opinion on the issue and we should express the fact that homosexuality is wrong. It is wrong everywhere and anyone who says they are born that way is an idiot. 3pts for voicing a real, honest correct opinion. technical foul for hatred comment!!
ps we have become to tolerant as a society because everyone is afraid of stepping on peoples toes. Try to change homosexuality not

Gee, Jason sure is a biggot with anybody who disagrees with his position. Educated people who think that homosexuality is wrong are stating an opinion and it is not a phobia. I am not going to pay to watch a player or buy any product that they endorse if they want to come out of the closet. For those of you who disagree with this, just remember the past when some sports personalities said some politically incorrect things and you were screaming for them to be fired.

I think Hardaway's comment were too extreme. I also think that Amaechi came out for the money or the fame. If he wanted to come out to his family and friends good for him, but why the need to come out to the public when few people even remember him playing. I think the issue is that he is a man. How many WNBA players would have a problem with a lesbian teammate? Probably a lot less. If Hardaway wants to say that he doesn't want to have a gay teammate then he also needs to say that he doesn't want a teammate that does drugs or gets weapon charges or beats his wife (all of which have been issues in pro sports). If you want to hate on a group of people, Mr.Hardaway, then hate on the ones that hurt other people.

We are to love everyone here on earth.
But we don't have to tolerate there sinful behavior, being Gay is a sin before God, you are wrong as two left shoes. You cannot dress it up any kind of way, when you say I'm Gay, you have made the choice to be that way therefore if you continue to remain Gay you will suffer the consequence of that sin

A bigot is a bigot. Take his statement, replace the words 'gay people' with "African Americans" and see how acceptable that would be. By anybody's standards.

As someone who is gay, I initially took issue with Mr. Hardaway’s comments about hatred in relation to gay people.
I then recall the quote widely attributed to the French philosopher, Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
In truth, I was not comfortable to hear Mr. Hardaway’s words, but, we must remember we do have certain freedoms and I think freedom of expression and speech should never be censored. You must understand, I am not defending Mr. Hardaway’s statements, not by any means. But, I am defending his rights to express them.
All people should have the right to assemble peaceably and express their thoughts and feelings, no matter how ridiculous or insightful those thoughts may be. The First Constitutional Amendment allows for freedom of speech and freedom of expression. The right is enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is granted formal recognition by the laws of most nations.
In a time where our liberties are systematically being pulled, we must always remember that this country was founded on certain principles which we must never relinquish.
In my opinion, Mr. Hardaway is not an intelligent man, nor do his words of hate afford him the respectability that he could have commanded as a famous person who others may see as a role model. He is a hateful, crude, man who has much to learn about life and those around him.

ALEXANDER IS THE MOST INTELLIGENT WRITER ON THIS POST. YES,YOU CAN TAKE ISSUE WITH HARDAWAY ALL YOU WANT,BUT RESPECT HIS RIGHT TO EXPRESS WHAT HE FEELS. THAT'S WHAT OUR TROOPS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN ARE DYING FOR. I MYSELF HAVE ISSUES WITH GAYS,AND I AM ALSO UNCOMFORTABLE IN THEIR PRESENCE.I WILL NOT COMPROMISE IN THIS FOR THE SAKE OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. BUT ,THEN AGAIN,SINCE I AM NOT A MAJOR SPORTS FIGURE OR A MAJOR CELEBRITY,I DON'T HAVE TO.

How would he feel if a white person were to replace "gay people" with the word Arfican American?Racism and bigotry is exactly what Mr.Hardaway is preaching. Homosexuality is NOT A CHOICE!I personally think Mr. Hardaway is a closeted homosexual."Was Tim Hardaway Gay in 2001?" Yes I belive so..

Tim Hardaway expressed how he felt without fear. I am sure he is not the only one who feels this way. Anyone who is shocked by his reaction is in complete denial that the world has accepted homosexuality. If you're angry with him- GROW UP! He didn't even use vulgar language. His feelings could have been of religious beliefs. Does that mean we chastise him for his beliefs as well? Accept his opinion and move on! I'm sure Amaechi knew that someone would feel this way. If he didn't, then why would he even write a book about it?

If John Amaechi can't help his feelings towards men, Tim Hardaway has the same right to feel the way he feels about gay men. If John Amaechi has the right to express his sexual orientation - and nobody can deny him that - Tim has the same freedom to express his views about anything he wants. Who says that you have to love everybody, and can't hate anybody?
Basketball fans will remember Tim's crossover and many game-related things, but the only Amaechi's legacy is that he was a gay man in an NBA locker room and he hid it from his teammates.
