Once again, I'd like to thank Jordan, 'Nique and Dr. J for ruining everything.
Bonus: More video footage of Young Thunder's 'Dunks That Would Have Been' after the jump. Highlights include a 'Nique-like two-handed reverse, a Jordan-like rock-the-baby and an alley-oop slam where he hits his head on the damn rim!

Pfft, personally I'd like to thank Jordan, 'Nique, and Dr. J for perfecting everything. Dwight wouldn't have won the contest, he's too tall. It just wouldn't work. Nate should have won. Gerald jumps over a box and gets a 50? Makes no sense to me. Nate jumped over a person taller than him last year and gets a 50. That's 50-worthy. Not boxes. The things that Nate can do at his size are simply amazing. He should have won that contest not based on his size, but on the things that he can do.
Great find on the vids, Skeets. The Russian Judges assured themselves and us that the Dunks haven't advanced since 1987. Whew, glad to know they maintained their positions as everlasting dunk gods....
I don't understand the measuring process. Jameer Nelson, or whomever, stands there, arbitrarily holding the tape measure around shoulder height and extending it upward., which seems so inexact as to be rendered pointless.
That said, the kiss-the-rim dunk is terrific. Thanks for bringing it to light.
Nothing new here. Jordan, Dr. J.etc., got a dollar bill from the top of the backboard!(or was it a coin?) Anyone shorter than Spud Webb deserves recogntion otherwise nothing spectacular has not been done since the oldies but goodies. If you have a chance see the old footages, you will be amazed.
Dwight got robbed. Nate didn't do good enough dunks to beat Dwight's sticker dunk. It should have been Dwight and Gerald.
Jamie: I think the measuring thing was strictly "showmanship," as Kenny said in the broadcast.
Listed instead of the Dwight Howard "disappointment" vid: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by National Basketball Association."
Uhhh.....
Well the fact that he could not even make his dunks work for him may have contributed to his loss...cmon now
He was measuring from the sticker to the bottom of the backboard which is a known height. You then just add the two together. Much easier than measuring from the floor.
Doesn't look like this is what he actually did, but Jameer could have used the tape to measure from the top of the backboard & subtract.
The best dunk since the Jordan, Dr.J era was Andre Iguodala's dunk from behind the backboard last year.
And he came in second because he was taller than Nate Robinson. That's why the dunk competition is a joke.
The best dunkers won't have anything to do with it.
He was robbed... Jordan gave him an 8. The "sticker" and the "kiss" dunk were the best dunks in the contest!!! And boxes cmon. somethin new maby.
I am pretty sure that MJ,Dr.J,and Nique are glad to keep their rights as the dunk kings!!!!!!!!!!
Douchebag (the very first 1) you contradicted yourself, you said D Howard would have not won because of his height but then choose the shortest contestant to win it all??? The dunking contest is not about big or small, its about creativity and finesse, if you cannot look good while "wowing" the fans you should lose...He touched the top of the backboard....he's kissing rims for good sake!!! Who have you seen kiss a rim, not even the greats kissed a rim (they could probably)....stick to hockey or sumthing rookie...
After so many years of the dunking contest it takes real imagination to come up with something new and exciting. Vince Carter did a few years back, and now my hats off to Howard. That was certainly putting your money where your mouth is.Bravo!!!
it's so much a problem that a big man can't win it, but instead the fact that creativity doesn't seem to be rewarded. last year's behind the backboard dunk and this year's sticker dunk were the two best in each year respectively (i believe) and neither one was rewarded.
i was also pleased to see nate robinson almost become the first victim of the nate robinson rule.
To Jason Barkley (comment #8),
That makes perfect sense. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
Hey Goerge Neither Dr. J or Jordan took a dollar from the top of the back board. It was David Thompson that was rumored to have taken a quarter from the top of the back board but it was during a practice and not in a slam dunk contest and never truely documented.
How quick everyone is to talk about how good the 80s contest were yet not give credit to Vince Carter who probably had the best overall dunk contest showing ever....
Gerald Green said he also wanted to move the rim to 12' and he had some dunks prepared for it. Seeing as he can jump higher than Howard, that might've been exciting. Also, the Top-10 all-time Dunk Green had prepared for the Contest was not used, he is saving it for next year.
jameer nelson had the height already written down. they just knew how high he could jump and came with it already on there. it was showmanship.
Vince Carter vs Jason Richardson dunk contest ! now that is something I would pay to see !
