Once upon a time, Scott Pollard was one of the league's most beloved characters. He was a one-man NBA Hair Watch before such a thing existed, and a prominent cheerleader on those forgotten Kings teams. It's okay if you've lost track of him; he's bounced around, been injured, and rarely played. Maybe his innocence is gone, maybe the novelty has worn off, but either way Pollard's been below the radar.
Until Sunday, when he decided to stick it to the powers that be once and for all. From The Cleveland Plain Dealer:
[Nancy Reagan], famous for her anti-drug message, would not have been amused had she seen Pollard look into the camera during Sunday's telecast of the Cavs' game against the Indiana Pacers and say, "Hey kids, do drugs."They then quote one father's outrage, and reveal in the process that Pollard "made a few funny faces" before making the comment. Danny Ferry was forced to an issue an official apology, as was FSN Ohio. And somewhere in a secret office, LeBron's team wondered if this would even further dampen his endorsements.
Pollard himself took the whole thing in stride, but tried to explain his actions:
"It was a bad joke. That's all it boils down to. There are a number of things people could say about it, but it just turned out it was a bad joke. Obviously, I don't believe that."Note: he only pointed out that he doesn't think kids should do drugs. Not that drugs are bad.
Via Empty the Bench, here's Scott Pollard's message for the children.

Actually scott pollard was not a towel warmer on those kings teams, he was a used, and decent backup center.
what a useless piece of crap..fire his ass,let him get a real job..then hell have to pay for his drugs with his minimum wage salary..because lets face it..hes a NOBODY !!!!!
any guy that paints his finger nail's should NOT be in teh NBA, unless your Dennis Rodman, then it'a aight
i thought it was funny in all sort of levels.
Andee thinks its funny on all sort of levels...typical coming from a druggie himself.
Wake up America! Scott Pollard is just upfront about it. His message is actually what our government tells us indirectly; Keeps everyone from capitailizng off drugs. Lawyers, district attorneys, DEA, FBI, the prison industry and other big businesses would be out of jobs if it wasn't for drugs. Drugs are the main reason many individuals in our society have jobs. Most of those serving time are there behind drugs, including all those that commit those "senseless crimes" that many wonder about, which are actually committed to set examples when a deal goes bad.
Entertainment, such as the NBA, distracts us from seeing the real issues in our society, such as drug abuse and illicit drugs, while the governmetn sits back and watches how the mass media dictates our live. Such as this blog that we are on is doing at this moment with everyone reading this and other blogs.
This was nothing more than a quip. It wasn`t a public service announcement, and if he thought it was going to be seen by anyone other than the cameraman, he wouldn`t have said it. Give the guy a break, the cameraman a bonus and leave it alone.
If I need a message to stay off illegal drugs I'll listen to a law enforcement officer and not a reject from the Red Skelton television show.
If I was around him when he said that, I woulda punched him across the face on national television.
What happened to professional athletes being great role models?
Stupidity? Yes. Comment taken seriously? Don't! Remember when President Ronald Reagan thought he was off camera and off mic and said something about the US commencing the bombing of Russia? Politicians and celebrities typically find themselves saying and doing the politically correct thing (definition of politics) and why? A - because it's probably in their's and their organization's best interest, and 2 - they'll face the wrath of the media, followed by the people who have no thought processes of their own other than what the media etches in their head. The guy made a dumbass comment because, for 2 seconds, he tried to be funny and failed. Has that ever happened to any of you?
I don't think anyone is taking it or his comment seriously. Okay, actually, it looks like some are... sheesh.
I think he had the comment all wrong....that was the 80's / 90's...He should have said..."Kid's suck down your parent's toxic kitchen inhailents" to keep up with the times...since drugs have become so expensive in a junkies world, but that would have been too wordy and you know how pricey the cost can be for air time.
Manuel is correct all the way! If it weren't for drugs, the lawyers and judges in the nice part of my town wouldnt have jobs anymore.
Who cares what Scott Pollard has to say?
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
I think you all are going too far.
If he said that, and your kid was listening, then its your job to tell them it was a joke and that you shouldn't do drugs....unless your kid is a total waste of space and semi dumb, hes not gonna watch that and go OK a Semi-Famous NBA Player told me to go do drugs, so lets go get high.
Secondly, all you hyprocrite dumb-a%%es out there who are like, "what happened to all the role models in sports?" i am going to tell you a little secert..when partents stopped parenting their kids, these role models said F*&K It and they left! So heres a bright idea, instead of relying on somone who got passed through highschool cause of his sports gift to RASIE YOUR KIDS, RAISE YOUR OWN DAMN KIDS and BE YOUR OWN DAMN KIDS ROLE MODEL !!!!!!!!!!!!
It really makes me laugh to see how some uptight people who think they have all the answers and are perfect can persacute an over paid bench warmer for having fun and kidding around. must be none of these people that are so outraged have ever said anything in jest.
to no2drugs, , guilty dog barks first, and usually loudest!!,,, maybe u need to take 2 x 4 out of ur eye, before looking for a toothpick in andee's
you know with all that is going on in the world, you would think people would complain about something, that really matters,in this world, just goes to show that even in america we"do not have the freedom of speech we were tought, then again what about the media, just another ploy to seel half true, stories and half true statements, all you people who were offended, you all need to grow some skin and get over it already, might be a nba star but even those people can say what they want weather we like it or not,you all need to get a life other that tv and computers,no wonder we get no respect world wide we cant seem to mind our own buisness
It seems to some pro sports personalities, the more money they make, the smarter they become. But the real truth is, They become DUMB,STUPID and beleive they are untouchable. They (some) beleive they can do and say anything they want. This guy is on TV and says "Hey Kids, Do Drugs" should be held accountable for what he said. The guy is Stupid.
when your kids listen to those on a screen over your on voice then you have no one to blame but yourself so get over your own stupid ideas and start being a parent
