One of the amazing things about the Warriors playoff run is how it's been so uniting for sports fans. I don't know a single non-Mavericks fans that aren't pulling hard for the Warriors to triumph here ... everyone loves them. Everyone. It amazes me because there's so little about the NBA that's universally loved in the sports world.
So I'm trying to put my finger on why, exactly. As best I can tell, these are the reasons for the universal Warriors love, and feel free to add your own in the comments.
Underdog Status. For the purposes of right here and right now, this is the biggest one. They're the 8-seed, the team that hasn't been to the playoffs in forever, the little engine that could. It's an underdog story ... it's the NBA's own little slice of the NCAA tournament. The atmosphere in the building, and how much it means to the local fans finds a way to come through on television ... and that means something.
Don Nelson. I think your average fan out there can relate to Don Nelson ... because everyone has an alcoholic uncle that looks like just like him. He sits on the bench with that lovable "Finishing that entire bottle of gin was a bad idea, but I'm going to do it again tomorrow" look on his face. It's adorable. The other side of the Nellie appeal is, of course, the style of play he brings. People like to clap when the ball goes through the hoop ... the Warriors make that happen as often as possible. Win or lose, it's rarely boring.
Stephen Jackson. Stephen Jackson's crazy, but he's the good kind of crazy ... everyone has a relative like him, too. He's got a good heart, and he'll give his all for you, but damned if it wouldn't be better for everyone if he would just shut the hell up every now and then. The downside to Jack is the propensity for technical fouls and calling officials bitches, but ... he plays with joy and intensity at all times. He loves to be out there, and it's hard to not be affected by it.
Baron Davis And His Beard. Having the thus-far MVP of the playoffs doesn't hurt, either. Not only has he been nearly unstoppable on the court, but he's got an easy smile and a friendly beard, too ... sort of like Magic Johnson.

Yeah you're right the warriors are a great underdog team, as they will most likely remain for existence. Now I do give them credit for being a fiesty team with a buch of fighters. But to me a team that trips a running gaurd (Harris)without making a play on the ball is not on to root for. Another reason I will not be rooting for the Warriors is the fact that they are honestly not that great. Yeah they can shoot, but they can't win. Now even if they continue to sell their souls to the devil and manage to beat Dallas, the fight will stop there.

reason to hate the warriors: they complain after every foul like they're above the rules and when they stop jibber-jabbing after three minutes of banter, they go around clapping and showing up officials. just shut the bleep up and play, it's been a wonderful series and would be even better if we cut out the complaints.

More on the Nellie style of play angle:
I am sick to death of grind it out, foul everytime someone gets near the basket, Spurs/Pistons-type ball.
I want to see fast breaks, (made) 3-pointers, active defense that forces a lot of steals, good passing, dunks, athleticism and Baron Davis's beard.
The Duncan/Shaq era must end.

Comment by gggeo is exactly why almost the whole league's fans hate the Mavs and Mavs fans. Before the playoffs started, I had no problems with the Mavericks ... didn't love them, but didn't hate them either. But after hearing all the interviews of the arrogant Mavs players, their obnoxious owner, and the 'might as well give us the Finals trophy already' Mavs fans, I actually jumped on a bandwagon - The Mavs Hater Bandwagon ... and I don't think I'm getting off anytime soon. Have fun fishing Mavs!

gggeo...you have got to be kidding me! for a team that has SUCH a big size advantage...i've NEVER seen so much flopping on the part of the Mavs. And about bitching/clapping...Jackson got kicked out because of his reputation. He wasn't even CLAPPING at the refs. And if YOU want to talk about a whiny punk, talk about that ugly ogre Dirk. He gets touched with the finger of one of the Warriors guards, and he falls like he's just gotten shot.
This is ANOTHER reason why no one likes the mavs. When you guys don't win, you guys whine and try to find a scapegoat for your overmatched team.
I agree with you on the fact that it is an awesome series, but if you are gonna label one team as a bunch of whiners, you might want to look at the other side of the spectrum where there is a legitimate argument to the case that the MAVS are the bigger whiners....remember terry's classless body slam of Baron Davis.

i'm talking about game situations. the injustice of the sixth foul on baron was ridiculous. the mavs could've easily ran out the clock if the refs didn't blow the whistle as they didn't have anyone around harris besides baron. and then jackson goes nuts about the call too. apparently they don't understand that they didn't have any time left as "thug ball" means everyone is against them. the refs did them a favor by calling the foul as it at least left them with some time to come back. playoffs baby you gotta love it.

Im sorry, but your calling the Warriors whiners? That is all we have been hearing out of the Mavs and their ridiculous owner since last year when they completely blew there chance to win an NBA championship. Maybe the Mavs would have been prepared for the playoffs this year if they had taken any responsibilty for losing last year, instead of blaming the refs, David Stern and D-Wade. I liked the Mavs last year, even though i'm a Suns fan, but after there childish behavior after losing in the Finals, I hope they get taught another lesson in humility this year.

cuban and the mavs have shut their mouths all year long and learned that whining gets them no where. i don't know what u guys are watching, but the calls are going both ways. do we really need warriors shouting at refs. yeah, terry got his technical, mavs didn't get theirs for an illegal substitution in game 4. lets just move on and focus less on jawing and more on playing out the series. you would think that the players would learn how the refs are calling the games by now. but, i guess you guys love to see disrespect towards authority.

The reason that the Golden State Warriors are likeable is because they in the playoffs for the first time in thirteen years and they are a breath of fresh air in the NBA playoff plus the Dallas Mavericks owner needs to see a head shrink to suggest that Septemeber 11 was a inside job by our goverment in a film that Mark Cuban made.

fans of the other western teams with legit shots at making the finals (spurs, suns, rockets and jazz) all probably believe their team can handle the warriors much more easily than they could handle the mavs (if they could at all). so the warriors winning means a better shot making the finals (no disrespect meant to golden state)...

hahaha..we're talking about fouls...
i heard this from some other blogger, and I felt it was fairly accurate. It gives a little extra juice to my belief that Dirk is getting breaks...plus it is just plain funny.
David Stern is Hitler...
The refs in this series are the Nazi...
Dirk is German...
SOOO that's why the refs are letting Dirk do whatever he wants
haha...and Dirk STILL sucks.

This is quite a series! On the one hand, the Mavs have been working for a year to get back to the Finals and have had an amazing season. In a way, its kinda sad to see all that effort and success evaporate in the first round. (By the way, Nash should be the MVP).
On the other hand, Nellie has helped inspire the Warriors in to quite a handful for the Mavs and I much prefer the faster pace game they play to the grind it out games where the score is in the 80s or low 90s.
Frankly, in some ways, the Warriors deserve to win and are the hungrier team but they have a big Achilles Heel and that is their ability to handle adversity! Playing well as the underdog is cool- in fact GREAT- but these meltdowns at the end of close games is disturbing.
In both of the Warrior losses, they've had some pretty questionable calls made against them and thats understandably frustrating. On top of that, it turns the momentum but not because Dallas is playing better-its that the refs slow them down allowing Dallas to get back into it. That may not be a 'conspiracy' but the Warriors- particulary Jackson and Davis- start loosing it big time. They gotta learn to play through that or they're toast! Also makes them less sympathetic when Jackson continues to project the thug identity he had in Indiana.
I like underdogs but the Mavs are showing more poise in the face of adversity so far (except for Nowitzki, although he was good that last game).
To me, it looks like the winner of the Suns/Spurs series will eventually be the Western Conf Champs 'cause there are already too many chinks evident in the armor of whoever wins the Dallas/Golden State series.

Martin you hit the nail on the head about the Mavs armor having a chink in it and the Sprus/Suns victor will go to the finals. Dirk looks completely lost on the court and if they make it to the next round, any team would just have to watch film on any game between the Warriors and Mavs this year because they have had their number all year. Its refreshing to see how the fans have helped the Warriors in being the most vocal crowd I can remember. Also, you have to love that Nellie used to coach the Mavs until they let Nash slip away and he lost any desire to stay there. Cuban is a whining baby and needs to let his team win or lose without standing up and bitching about every call against them. How embarrasing for them. I say the Suns will beat the Spurs in 7 and it will be a bloody battle to the end with Ginobli deciding not to flop even once! He was close to Barbosa in the 6th man voting but is a mere shadow of the Blur! Go Suns!

I don't root for dallas and i don't love the warriors.
Nellie has always wanted an underdog team. His style is great against certain teams, but isn't what championships are made of.
Stephen Jackson is is "the good kind of crazy". Hmmm...I wonder what the fans at the Palace and the local gentlemen's clubs around Indiana think of his "crazy" ways. Plus he has a grill full of chiclets.
Baron's beard I kind of like. Remind's me of Chef. Thank you children.
I have to agree with gggeo. There's no need to argue. No one would want to root for guys when they aren't playing games after getting kicked out for arguing calls.

The warrior fans here obviously mirror the same problem of their beloved team. They lack a graciousness in losing. To be a great team, you win with grace and you lose with grace. In the waning moments of a loss the warriors key players lose it. Instead of looking at what they could have done to win, they look to point fingers at the refs or the mavs, etc... I don't recall any of the mav's looking to find blame in anyone other than themselves when they have lost in this series. I don't recall any of the mav's losing control and getting kicked out in the waning moments of the game when they are behind, nor getting fined by the team or the league.
There were weak calls on both sides of the ball as well as missed calls on both sides of the ball. Its the NBA playoffs, c'mon...blown calls are a tradition! but you have to work through that adversity because it is going to happen....to every team.
Those who find the mav's to be the whiners are clearly watching the game with "golden" colored glasses or a pre-disposed dislike of the mavs. The warriors have spent far more time yapping back at the refs than the mavs. Also, watch the warriors after the whistle is blown...watch how many times a warrior has run up and knocked the ball out the mav's hand AFTER the whistle has blown. This doesn't affect the game other than to say the warriors have shown poor sportsmanship and a lack of graciousness. They will not have the heart of a champion until the have the grace of one! If they could mirror the grace of their coach Nellie they might gain the respect they crave.

Hey "to the temple". Who would you equate Jason Terry's body slam of Baron Davis to? What was JT complaining to the ref about after being T'd up? It wasn't that hard of a slam? Give me a break. JT should of gotten a flagrant 2 and an ejection. But that's not happening in Dallas. Just like no way BD or SJ are getting ejected in Oaktown for their childish clapping behaviour. Face it, the only games Dallas has won were games where SJ has been ejected. If that's what its going to take for Dallas to win the series then Avery needs to have his boys tick off SJ.
