So earlier this week, the FanHouse and every other media outlet in the world brought you some shocking news: refs make racially-biased calls. The world ended, Stern got involved, and an unassuming academic paper became headline news. The thing is, very few people read the actual study, and the media got it all wrong. Man on a Rant informs us that if they had, they might have actually gotten the point of the research:
I'm simply trying to point out that the very root of this "scandal" shouldn't have to do with whether white refs call more fouls on black players than on white players; it's how they call these fouls compared to black refs... If the study's most fundamental data shows that there is an ambiguous discrepancy between officials calling fouls (i.e. are white refs under-calling fouls on white players or are black refs over-calling them?), why aren't we discussing THAT finding instead of immediately pointing a finger of blame? This is only a small excerpt of the post, which really deserves a little bit of your time. However, allow me to translate: The study's not out to prove that white refs are biased against black players. Black players get the same number of fouls called no matter who the refs are. When it comes to white players, there's no way of knowing if white referees are calling too few fouls or black refs are calling too many.
Basically, the fouls called on black players are only important as a contrast with those called on white players. What's at issue here is pro- or anti-white bias; black players aren't discriminated against, but white players might have an advantage because they aren't getting penalized like they should.

I'd be curious to find out the flip side of the study, i.e. whether there is a racial discrepancy with respect to the fouls drawn. Do white players GET more foul calls in relation to minutes played?
I found this study interesting:

At a glance, it appears that only one white player (Dirk) is in the top twenty in fouls drawn. Does this suggest that black players get the benefit of the whistle more often than whites?
Or is it that black players just take it to the rack more often?
I have to disagree with your comments on referees all of them are white and very frew black. What does that tell you/I hope one day we will get over the balck and white thing. One thing that I can say that that the Golden state warriors played a great game and I hope that peoples let Jackso go inwhat he did inthe past. This is a youg man and we all makes mistake.
How about researching the number of times, since Kermit Washington sucker punched rudy Tomjonovich.that black players punched white players. With the small numbers of whites in the sport since the 70's you will be amazed by these stats.I doubt very much if this study would be done though. Not everyone participates in the BLAME game.
What the study also doesnt tell you is whether or not the black players deserved the foul. They are more agressive and run their mouths constantly and argue all the time, probably more with white referee's. a black is going to let that crap go much more than a white referee who is just tired of the nonsense. Lets do a study on which referees get physical contact and arguments and confrontation from which players. Every fool in the world knows the marginal players dont get the calls and that would be the white guys. Any way to turn something into white guys abusing the blacks. Remember when all the white girls in the army were getting raped by the black drill sargents and they actually made the black guys out to be victims. This nonsense is so completely assinign it gets to the point where I dont even want to watch sports anymore. Lets see how much these ghetto superstars make when whites stop watching.
the study is completely bogus!!! they looked at box scores so we are fighting over a moot study
I wanted to fight Duncan because I thought he was Cuban.
If all ten players on the court are black and the refs are white how does the white ref keep from calling all the fouls on the black players? Is that reflected in the study?
