Now that the Warriors improbable playoff run is over, the franchise is looking to next year. The cap situation isn't pretty, but the team seems to feel recent successes put the team close to serious contention.Baron Davis, for his part, wants to capitalize on his recent performance to get a contract extension to keep him in Oakland until 2013, according to Marcus Thompson in the Contra Costa Times.
Davis' contract runs through 2008-09 at max money. He can sign an extension this summer, and he has an opt-out clause he can exercise next summer. He's 28 now, and the full extension would take him to age 34.
I understand that Warriors Nation in enthralled with Boom and the whole whirlwind he brought this spring. But you do realize Davis' Golden State experience was a complete failure up until the middle of April, right? Boom isn't just an injury waiting to happen -- he's an injury that's probably already happened. He's played 70 percent of his possible games since joining the Warriors, and even then he plays much fewer minutes than other huge-contract point guards.
Toss in Golden State's perilous cap situation, which is at $55 million in 2009 without adding in Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins, Matt Barnes, Mickael Pietrus, or this year's draft picks... and a knee-jerk Davis extension looks ridiculous. Of course, Chris Mullin has made ridiculous moves before. I expect the extension to be signed by Independence Day.

Wow,
Baron, Jermaine O'neal, KG, and Shawn Marion all have opt outs next summer...
Mike Bibby does as well. The next two summers should be wild.
Tom, that's good incentive for a team to sign Baron Davis. If they don't, they might have to settle for Mike Bibby. Ugh.
Aren't the Lakers supposed to have cap room next year? Wasn't Kupchak targetting the 2008 offseason? If they can't pull in a KG and Baron opts out next summer (highly unlikely at $17 million), how about Boom+Kobe?
I think the team did a wonderful job. But my nephew was in the NBA and it is a business and cut down to money. He is a great player and it would be wonderful to keep him here but it will come down to $$$$$$$$$$$$.
Thanks for a great season.

First of all Tom....F" the Lakers and Kobe. Secondly Barons extension would not have much effect on the Salary Cap over its current effect. He is already being paid the MAX right now. Extending the contract under MAX terms would just simply extend what he is getting now with normal increases. Also the Salary Cap is a soft cap and it allows for teams to resign their OWN players without most cap restrictions. Therefore we can go over the cap tax if we are resigning our own players. It is only if we decide to trade or go after a free agent that the true cap comes into play. We can sign Baron, Barnes, Monta, Bedirins and Petrus and keep them but at the same time we would have no ability then to go after say Kevin Garnett without a very creative trade. Case in point the New York Knicks payroll for 2006-7 was almost $140 MIllion!!! The Dallas Mavericks were almost $100 Million! Rememeber the last few years Michael Jorday palyed the BUlls paid him $50 Million/yr. They were way over the soft cap but could be since Michael was their player. They could have paid him $100Million if they elected to do so.Most of the league is way over the cap already. Also, Baron is not going anywhere, he likes it here and the Lakers are already way over the cap. Current Laker payroll is $77 Million and unless they dump half their team have no money for any big movement. In other words the Lakers are screwed for a while and that is one reason they say Kobe is pissed and wants out. Hey Tom, funny you bring up Baron and Kobe together. You maybe on to something here of Kobe with Baron.... It's just more likely that Kobe and Baron will play together with the W's!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good player ,if he can get the money why not.
give baron an extension on his contract. without him the warriors were not that good. richardson is great.im not sure who else is any good on that team? barnes had some good games.s jackson is good but acts like a baby.
