So now that the Bobcats have traded for shooting guard Jason Richardson and re-signed wing Gerald Wallace, one has to wonder: what becomes of their mustachioed rookie, Adam Morrison? My answer? His NBA future in Charlotte is in deep trouble.Michael Jordan would have not made the Brandan Wright-for-J Rich deal if he did not intend to start the former Michigan State star. They're paying Richardson $50 million over the next four years, so he'll be starting at shooting guard. The high-flying Wallace, who was had for the bargain basement cost of $57 million over the next six years, is going to be starting at small forward.
Which leaves exactly where for Adam Morrison? If the plan is to make him a Vinny Johnson-type microwave off the bench, is that something he's going to be interested in? Perhaps. But that doesn't pay well, unless your name is Kyle Korver.
Morrison's in trouble, and here's the reason: he's just too slow. If you look at the small forwards in the league, he is among the slowest and worst defensively. Is he swift enough to play shooting guard? That remains to be seen. If the Bobcats want to go small, they can play a lineup of Richardson, Wallace, Morrison and Ray Felton at point guard, with Okafor at center. That's not bad ... for the East.

Morrison's under contract, he'll do what they tell him to do and eventually he'll become a free agent. Although I too question his overall game, his future is still wide open.
It sure is shocking that MJ would appear to give up on a player like that. Imagine...

Charlotte also re-signed Matt Carroll and drafted Jared Dudley, both of whom could potentialy beat out Mr Moustache for the back up sg/sf minutes. Even in the smallball lineup suggested I think Walter Hermann would be preferred over Morisson at the 4

Jordan can't draft, I think he should draft players like him, Brandon Roy, althetic, balllers, knack to win, but at least he knows when to give up on a bust.

Well, if Morrison isn't fast enough to guard small forwards, he definately isn't quick enough to defend a shooting guard. They aren't always as athletic as the small forwards of today's NBA, but they are nearly always much quicker. He simply is not athletic enough and can't do what he did in a non-power conference in college. It is the most shocking turn of events in the world! A white scorer overrated in college not panning out in the pros? This is the first I've heard of such a concept! Why didn't anyone foresee this sort of tragedy?!?!
Even though Morrison had a horrible rookie season, I would think he has value with teams that don't realize how bad he is. I would imagine he's trade bait NOW; once the season starts and he's 5th on the rotation chart, he won't put up ANY numbers. To most he's got potential, and isn't a bust.
For now he couldn't even be a Danny Ferry because he isn't a good 3-point shooter. He has a game predicated on mid-range jumpers set up by getting space between his defender with a "quick" first step-- but he can't do that in the pros. No speedy enough, sir. He isn't a standstill shooter, and not much range either. Plus, he is a poor free throw shooter for being, uh, a shooter.
And yes, I used Danny Ferry because he was an unathletic white wing player who didn't pan out in the pros. Morrison may play for 12 more years, but unless something changes he'll be one of the biggest Great White Hope dissapointments in a long line of white disappointments. Plus, I HATE his 12 year old boy stache... he should be ashamed to even pretend it's a facial hair.
He bugs the pooh out of me... not entirely his fault, I guess, I have a soft spot for hating the yearly overrated white college player who actually sucks. Reddick won't do what he did at Duke in the pros either, but at least he is a shooter who can SHOOT. That's always useful.
Because many NBA fans can be subconsciously overly supportive of a white dude, Morrison will be popular for at least the length of his rookie contract. If given the shots, he'll also average 15 ppg with the occassional Mike Dunleavy-esque "Fake Break Out Game", where all his supporters say "Oh look he scored 27 points on 10-15 shooting, he's finally pulling it all together!", but of course it's fool's gold. After several years and a dumb big contract, people are giving up on Mike Dunleavy for being overrated, so this blind faith doesn't last forever-- but most black players who play ZERO defense, shoots every time he gets the ball and hits 30% of his shots, and does nothing else when on the court don't get the luxury of being fan favorites.
I could be wrong about Morrison, and I hate it when people give up on young players I like after one bad year. He could surprise me. But, however, although, I should point out, slow unathletic wing players who can't shoot nor play defense USUALLY don't have very successful careers in the NBA.
It's crazy but true.
Being a Vinny Johnson type for someone is probably the best he could hope for. I suspect he'll be something south of Juan Dixon. Streaky as all "get out", with hot shooting every once in a blue moon.

Ever heard of Dell Curry? Charlotte basketball has a history of employing a Stackhouse-esque gunner off the bench, and therein lies the position of The Great Mustachio

He will have to be content with being a sixth man because his skills won't allow him to start on most teams in the NBA. He is very streaky and most teams can't chance that.

The big problem for Morrison is on the defensive end not the offensive. Teams attack him when he is on defense. As far as his offense goes, he will get better. The NBA is all about understanding how to get to certain spots on the floor to get your shots. Morrison took too many high difficulty shots and that lowered his shooting percentage. If he can improve his understanding of the NBA game and improve his shot selection he will play. As far as Jordan is concerned I don't think he has a clue about how to evaluate NBA talent, (Kwame,Morrison). I'm not a big J. Richardson fan, someone on that team has to play defense.

Give him a break it was his first year. as far as defense goes... dont you worry about us... we got defense. we aint sweatin that.
mongothebeast... in all reality his offensive problems last year didnt stem from his lack of atheletic ability(though it did hurt his defense). his only problem was taking dumb shots trying to win games.
he played very well in the first half of the season and then crapped out in the last half (diabetes, fatigue, rookie wall, etc. etc. etc.)
he will be fine. he was a rookie.. steve nash sucked ass for 4 years before he was even considered decent. lay off.

Jordan's job is to find the best talent available and wait and see who pans out. If it is Morrison great, if it's Dudley great, Matt Carroll great. Jordan needs an overall increase in talent and competitiveness on the court. With these guys fighting for minutes they will see who rises to the top.

have to stick up for the sixers/billy king as it relates to kyle korver's contract.
per hoops hype, he is to earn 4.4 mil this year, which is about 1 mil below the nba average salary/mid-level exception. he is signed through 2011, at which time he will make 5.5 mil, which will certainly be below the average nba salary that year.
korver's contract is a good one for the sixers, plus he's still young and is a tradeable commodity.

Vinnie Johnson, Rip Hamilton and Reggie Miller didn't set the NBA on fire as rookies either. Morrison may turn out alright. His game revolves around finding a space to squeeze off a jumper, and it may take him a while to adjust. That said, I think that with the other players the Bobcats have acquired, his minutes will shrink and he won't develop. It would probably be better for him and the team that they look at trading him. Perhaps Portland or Seattle would welcome him back to the NW in exchange for Jack, Ridnour or Watson. The Bobcats are thin at the point.

every charlotte team has had a history of getting poor draft picks (rex chapman-larry johnson and now morrison) so it would not surprise me if you watch this lack of talent sit on the beach and earn more money per minute played and alot of the superstars. The only way you will see him off the bench is injury(i hope not) or foul trouble for a started.

One only knows how alittle playing he will get and for what he will make his $/min will be one of the highest in history(bench sitting was his major in college).

I loved watching Adam when he played at Gonzaga and I love watching him play for the Bobcats. My granddaughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 9 years old. She looks up to Adam when it comes to playing sports. I notice in her some of the same things you have said about Morrison. At times she seems confused and is slow to react which at that point she does a blood check and is 90% low. Given a shot of insulin she manages to come out of her slowness and her seemingly unawareness of what is going on around her. I know you all have heard the same old story about his diabetes maybe being a factor in his play but until you have witnessed a family member with the same disease doing almost exactly what Morrison is doing, please do not put him down. I would love for him to come to the Blazers as I would buy season tickets for myself and my granddaughter for the continuing education for my granddaughter in the fact that even with a disease such as they have, anything is possible. I LOVE YOU ADAM MORRISON. Keep up the good work.

Some white slow players take a few years to grow strong enough for the NBA. Adam, given a couple more years in the league could be a really sound player, that could change some games with his shooting. It's funny when you look at history, you'll find some of the best players took 3 or 4 years to become great players, it's sad, in the microwave world, team can't give slower players the time to produce, but it's all business, really and who jumps or runs fastest. Larry Bird, would never make it today!, maybe> Dr Bugs

Everyone needs to cut Adam some slack. Adam plays the 3 position, and this year i guarantee that Walter Herrmann will go to the 4. Gerald Wallace starting with Adam as a sub is not a bad lineup at all.
Everyone needs to cut Adam some slack. He's working out this summer and has a strength trainer, so he is realizing that he needs to step it up. Overall, his rookie season was NOT terrible. 11.6 ppg is not bad by any standards.
Adam isnt a bad draft pick, I have confidence that he will step up his game this year. Dont jump off the Morrison bandwagon just yet.
