We first talked about Tracy McGrady's activism regarding Darfur this past September, and he's still doing his part to raise awareness. With the Rockets in Orlando for a game against the Magic on Friday, McGrady spent part of Thursday afternoon at his former high school in nearby Auburndale, FL to officially launch a new humanitarian project. From the Lakeland Ledger:
Included in McGrady's presentation will be a pledge of $75,000 to build a school in the Djabal Camp in eastern Chad, an area of north Africa visited by McGrady last summer. The money will also help train teachers and provide a year's worth of school materials, clothing and other essentials for students.Auburndale High School will also be named a sister school to the one being built. The 400 students in attendance also saw footage from "Not a Game," McGrady's soon-to-be-completed documentary about his visit to Darfur this past summer. In addition to the school, McGrady is also soliciting support from the league and other NBA stars to raise millions of dollars to provide relief to refugees from Darfur. Regardless of what you think about McGrady as a player, it's refreshing to see a superstar use his position and resources for something other more than just selling more sneakers. (Cough, LeBron, cough)
McGrady has formed the T-Mac Alliance, which will work with other charitable groups to raise funds in support of education for Sudanese refugees.

HOW CAN HE CARE? HE STATED THE N.O. IS TO DANGEROUS TO HOST THE NBA ALL STAR GAME.
WHY DON'T HE WORK WITH THE YOUTH IN N.O. TO STOP THE KILLING?

I'm Tracy Mcgrady's biggest fan ever!!!!! He's my role model and I love him. I was sooo excited when I found out he visited Darfur and now I'm even more excited!!!! I attended a rally at the United Nations to stop the genocide in Darfur, so I'm super happy T-Mac is getting involved too!!! Go T-Mac!!! He may be injury-prone but he's a great role model and has a squeaky clean reputation and record for those of you who believe all athletes are thugs!

Tracy's one of many NBAers supporting the Darfur cause. There's also Kobe Bryant (and 6 other Lakers), Steve Nash, Amare Soudemire, Baron Davis and of course Ira Newble and Luol Deng, who started it all. Tracy's also put together NBA Standup Week for Darfur coming in March.
