Fresh off a five-game suspension for (allegedly) smoking weed, Pacer big man David Harrison got snaked into some comments about the validity of the Association testing its players for illicit substances. Mark Montieth of the Indianapolis Star has the goods."There's the politically correct thing to say, there's the basketball player thing to say and there's what I really want to say," Harrison said.Well, it is a rule made by government. And while I don't profess to speak with God regularly, I'm fairly certain most versions of the Almighty frown on spliffs as a general guideline.
Pressed for comment, he said: "I don't understand how they have a right to look into our lives on any level besides performance-enhancing drugs. It's not a rule made by government and it's not a rule made by God; it's made by an organization (the NBA). I guess they feel it will benefit that organization."
If Harrison were making a larger point about our country and whether marijuana should be illegal, or whether marijuana users should be subject to disciplinary action by their employers, maybe he'd have a point. But given our nation's current policy on marijuana, the NBA's well within its domain to take some salary back when you've done something illegal they've warned you about twice already. This isn't a stand; this is sour grapes.

Well, I am not a smoker myself even though I live in Van-sterdam, but it's my impression that there are roughly zero religions which specifically contain bans against weed.
Actually, I am in favour of most pro athletes smoking pot, because:
1) There's less trouble to be found on munchie runs to the Circle K than there is in the parking lot of you local Gentlemen's Club.
2) I feel safer knowing that your average NFL player is blissed out on Chronic and not looking for trouble after a little too much Courvoisier.

They need to test some of the people that work for Fanhouse.
They don't need to be tested for weed to play basketball until there actions are hurting the team. They aren't truck drivers or handle heavy EQ. Teachers are responsible for our kids everyday and don't get tested.

Way to miss the point again Ziller (at least he's consistent, Joe Morgan would approve). The league has the right to implement the rule, just like they have the right to have a dress code. It doesn't mean that it's a wise decision to exercise that right. Whether a player smokes marijuana has no effect on the league or on fans. If the league is worried about publicity, it can still have harsh rules for getting convicted of a drug offense. In fact, everyone involved would probably be better off if guys were at home smoking instead of at clubs drinking.
Since when does being a victim of a rule or law with which you disagree prevent you from voicing your opinion. Of course there are sour grapes, he was punished for breaking a rule he feels is unnecessary. That doesn't make his opinion less valuable.
Marijuana is not outlawed by any religion. While most religions require that you follow the laws of your nation, that is a significant difference.

I'm going to agree with FCJ.
I'd also like to point out that 'legal' and 'moral' are not always synonymous. It's legal to drink liquor until you put yourself into a coma. It's illegal to smoke a joint to unwind or relax. Drug testing athletes for pot and other non-PE drugs is an invasion of privacy. The fact that the USA still treats smoking pot as immoral (because it's illegal), and treats alcohol consumption as generally amoral or moral (since it's legal) is a travesty.
This is a sports blog, so I'll stop there.

Tom I am very certain you don't have a clue about what most versions of the Almighty thinks about weed. Some Christian religions approve and think it brings one closer to God. So Tom if you disprove of weed say so but don't hide behbnd claiming to know what the almighty's stance might be.

Tom,
It seems pretty clear that when Harrison says, “it’s not a rule made by government” he means is that the government doesn’t see a need to randomly test it’s citizens for marijuana.
As far as your understanding of religion and marijuana, you’re more than a bit off base. If any version of God had an issue with the plant, I’m sure he would have passed that information along to those that wrote the holy texts of the world’s religions. He didn’t. In fact, Marijuana has a long, well-documented history of being used in religious ceremonies all around the globe; including the Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Rastafarian faiths.

Uh. Perhaps it IS a performance enhancer. Known as a remedy for body aches and all, maybe that's why such spliffin' stars as Kareem, Walton, Parrish, Webber and many others were able to play so well for so many years.
I'm kidding. But, think about it.
And why drag God into it? The One who created it? Did God make a mistake?

excuse me mr. harrison but last I looked herb is still illegal...hence it's an illegal activity...and while in some cases it may be harmless...nevertheless until the law changes it to a legal substance...then the league has every right to test for an illegal substance...and if you don't like it...quit and go to work for home depot...oops they test for it there too...

Employers have the right to drug test their employees. Before you go to work where I work you are tested. A positive test and you are not hired.
You knew that going in Mr. Harrison and you got caught. Pay your fine, do your time and shut up.
As a Pacer fan since the ABA Days I am sick and tired of hearing of the Pacer's off the court problems. Since the brawl in Detroit, this team has had nothing but thugs on the team.
Larry and Donnie it is time to clean house and get rid of all of them.
Look at the fans in stands. No longer do we have sell outs, no longer to we put a competitive team on the court.
Time to blow it up and rebuild it. The likes of Harrison, Tinsely, Daniels and the others need to go just like Jackson and Harrington

i've been smoking weed daily for years, and i can safely say it is absolutely NOT a performance enhancer. It may benefit a person in a few minor ways every now and then, but not more than, say an aspirine would.
Hence I also agree that it is privacy invasion to test for weed.
The question of acting against marihuana versus tolerating its use can't be deceided in a correct manner if not all parties involved have experienced marihuana for themselves :-D

This misguided, weak minded, mental midget, is just like all the rest who can't face the day without artifical stimuli, they're just plain 'weak'! And stop using this lame ass argument-"well, alcohol's leagal", it doesn't wash, as drinking is also a form of 'weakness'! People who smoke weed, are those who can't face the world on it's on terms, they look for escape, but once you sober up, you find you've escaped nothing, and in getting 'high', you've dumbed down everything around you, and killed your incentive (besides eliminating brain cells you'll never get back). I'm a musician, and the worst thing about live performing is when you've done everything well, while those in your company are stoned, and they think they're giving a great performance, when because of the effects of 'weed', they're totally rubbish, and too high to understand it!!! Sober up! How many dead celebrity's does it take for you to understand that drugs appeal only to those who are weak of conviction, and bankrupt of morality. I'm finished with ya.
