Day-after eulogies have a way of making squeaks and squawks of truth peak out from the shadows. It is the day after in Dallas, and hey! there's Jeff Kaplan of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (via CSTB) reporting on why Avery Johnson canceled Monday's practice, leading to a team mutiny and bad mojo all around. A late-night party to celebrate Josh Howard's 28th birthday after Sunday's Game 4 loss turned Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson livid and led him to cancel Monday's practice, two sources confirmed.Kaplan reports only a few Mavericks attended Howard's bash, but it seems one was too many for Johnson. But do you blame him? Of course not. It should not this difficult to follow a 'no-parties' decree in the midst of a difficult playoffs series.
Johnson, who stressed no partying during the series, was informed before Monday's scheduled practice that Howard handed out fliers to teammates in the locker room before Game 4, inviting them to his party at a Dallas nightclub. [...]
Upon learning of the party, the sources said, Johnson entered the locker room and asked the players who attended to stand up. Infuriated, Johnson lit into his team and then called off practice. He told the team they'd meet on the flight to New Orleans.
Howard shouldn't get killed for (the renewed interest in) his (old news) weed admission last week (the 'bad timing' was not his fault; he got asked a question and he is not a liar), but this incident leaves Maverick blood on his hands. Know your boundaries, man. (It will be worth watching how Mark Cuban responds to this; even if Avery's gone, might Josh also have gone too far?)

Every team should be so lucky (blessed) as to have a coach like Avery.
Perhaps if Howard and other stars in the NBA had such a passion about winning as they do partying there would be even greater games to watch.
From little league to the pro's there are idiots like Howard that just coast along when they could truly be so much better.
I wish I had a coach and team-mate like Avery who truly left everything on the floor. Okay he wasn't the best player, and maybe not the best coach, but you know he's giving you 110% every day.
Avery's model is commendable.

Cancel practice? The guys who partied were probably like, "thank you!"
Avery should have added more hours to practice?
WTF?

Sure, his ego is bigger than his head 1,000 times;
In the finals against Miami been 3-0 at the end of 3rd quarter Dirk suggested to double on Shaq or Hack-Attack either one;
His response? Avery benched Dirk for the rest of the game ? The Mavs lost that one and the rest is history;
He is got the Napoleon complex , he sees himself like a little captain sorrounded by bigger guys but he had the last word, go figure . ( needs teraphy )

It is unfortunate that NY gets all of the negative responses about how difficult it is to coach here. It seems that pressure is mounting all over even in the second tier markets. Avery Johnson out? Is Phoenix next to rid themselves of their leader for not winning? It is amazing how you could win nearly 3/4 of your games and get the ax. The next time someone talks about how difficult it is to coach in NY, look up Dallas (basketball or football) and owners named Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones. Cuban and Jones make Steinbrenners look mild-mannered and meek. Avery, come to NY. We need a coach of your caliber. We are dying to just back into the playoffs "by any means necessary."

I ONCE HEARD MARK CUBAN SAY THAT WHEN HE HIRED AVERY JOHNSON, AVERY MADE HIM LOOK SMART. SO NOW THAT HE HAS FIRED HIM, IS HE LOOKING DUMB? MARK DOES NOT NEED A NEW COACH, HE NEEDS A NEW SUPPORTING CAST FOR DIRK. STILL A FAN!!!

The GM made a very bad move bringing in Kidd from the Nets. No chemistry there. He looked like an old man throughout the round.He certainly wasn't anyone to guard Chris Paul. Avery should have found a way to stop Paul from driving the lane - but the trade for Kidd was devastating. NOT Avery's fault, Mr Cuban.
