You've gotta love Spurs' fans. So worried are they about losing to the Lakers in this series and feeling insecure about their chances in Game 4, one local writer is actually starting to complain about the officiating before the game has even started.
It's the news every Spurs fan has dreaded - the team is fighting for its season tonight in Game 4, and blowing the whistle will be one Joey Crawford. To recap, he was suspended for last year's playoffs ... after throwing Tim Duncan out of a regular season game because he thought Duncan was laughing at him on the bench. Then in Game 5 against New Orleans, he T'd up Gregg Popovich between the first and second quarters over an argument over a delay of game warning in which Pop was essentially correct.
Conspiracy! David Stern wants the Lakers in the Finals! Come on, people. Sure the Spurs and Crawford have a bit of a recent history together, but can we at least wait to see if there are actually any game-deciding calls made by Crawford before we begin with the histrionics?
Besides, as is noted in the same article, Crawford actually ranks eighth out of 62 officials in terms of making calls that favor the home team. Now if Steve Javie (who is a notorious anti-homer and number 59 on the same list) were to be working tonight, then you would have something to be seriously worried about.

It makes sense. The refs always help out us and Kobe. I like it.

whether or not you believe that some referees have bias toward or against particular teams/players, you have to admit joey crawford is an unprofessional, ego-maniac who lives to make calls that will get him more face time on tv. he is extremely demonstrative when talking to a player/coach about a call. he should've been a baseball umpire. the spurs/hornets game you mentioned showed crawford arguing with popovich and poking his chest with his finger (to which pop responded by slapping crawford's hand down and saying "don't touch me."). as a spurs fan, you better believe i am concerned when joe crawford's ugly mug is on my tv screen.

Recent history? This has been going on for years! That's why he's such an issue for us.As a fan, there are 2 names that will give you an "Oh s**t" at the beginning of a game,(Joey)Crawford, and Javie (interesting his name is mentioned in this same article).Sometimes, without knowing who the refs are,you can tell by the calls alone if one of them is working the game. There's nothing recent about it.

People in Phoenix are now gagging on their own tongues, laughing so hard at this post. San Antonio should build a statue honoring NBA refs ( and commissioners ).

Brand the SPUR fans pre-game complaints as you will, but you can't ignore the announcers' flagging of the bad calls in real time, and backed up by tape.
Stern's indifference for the SA media market has a long history since days of the SPURS rise to the '99 Finals series.

Look...bias is not at issue nearly as much as quality is. This guys should not be doing playoffs games, period. He is one of those brand of officials that think he is bigger than the game and is unable to control himself.
He traditionally loses control of games early with shaky decisions and then tries to overcompensate and ends up losing his cool completely. You wind up with a very choppy, very chippy game that no one really enjoys.
Now I am a Spurs, and firmly believe that he hates us, but he could just as easily snap at the Lakers and toss Kobe....he just does not belong on the court and I am AMAZED that Stern would even risk this and the hint of impropriety it gives.

I'm getting a little sick of all the Spurs and Spurs' fan bashing.I'd like to see the Lakers reaction if Crawford had tossed Kobe out on his butt for laughing instead of Tim!If Crawford was in Jackson's face poking around on him things might not have blown over as easily as they did with Pop.Who knows. But I seriously doubt they'd be sitting around talking about how much he loves them.My point is when we have a complaint about something,no matter how justified,we're "babies" or "making excuses".But the Lakers might be under the same exact scenario and they got "robbed",or the Spurs "paid off somebody".I don't see anybody going into the game saying "We're going lose because of Crawford".I basically see it as a warning to watch your step because you know this guy is going to be on your butt. It's not an excuse,it's a fact.

LA will win this series but I think in the finals they will not ;
Either Detroit or Boston will give LA as much as they can handle.

Officiating is always a problem when teams play at home. Most people expect it there to be a bias for the spurs tonight but that just isn't the case. Refs are intimidated by the underlying idea they will be looked at all night for calls given to the spurs at home. I know this from experience in High School Baseball and basketball reffing over the last 6 years. Smaller level but same scenario.

scott, are you still crying about '07? what about this year? the fact that your beloved suns just can't get the job done against the spurs has nothing to do with anything. alright, you want to talk '07? the suns got amare and boris back for game six and they still couldn't push it to seven. losers.
frank, try to stay on topic, ok buddy?

Scott is pretty much right. The Spurs, of all teams, are the last ones who should be complaining about the refs after all the greif they gave the Suns for complaining about questionable calls and plays (oh yes, and Stern's great refs like Dougherty).
Sure, Stern and the NBA want the Lakers to go to the finals- big secret! So what can and should the Spurs do? Shut up about the refs and play the game!
I don't care for the Spurs but it would be nice to see them send the Fakers home with their tails between their legs and Stern on the verge of tears for his lost marketing opportunities.

Did I just hear Phil Jackson, on national TV, blaming the refs? I thought only the Spurs did that!!! (That would be sarcasm folks.)

So do you still feel they had nothing to be worried about? What a convenient no-call to end game 4.

Well I see everyone is complaining about that call that was no foul I don't see anyone talking about the shot Fisher made and hit the bottom of the rim and went out of bounds on Horry's leg that will have given the ball back to the Lakers with a new 24 second clock did Crawford robbed the Lakers ? Spurs fans stop complaining you had 4 quarters to beat the Lakers and could'nt do it it looks like you all needed the officials help but you didn't get it no it doesn't work that way your team was terrible tonight so accept the loss and go on.
