NBA Draft Crystal Ballin': San Antonio Spurs

Crystal Ballin' takes a team-by-team look at what should, could, and probably will happen in the June 26th NBA Draft.

San Antonio has a solid foundation with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, but for the most part, the rest of their roster has gotten very old all of a sudden. That's what happens I guess when you've been competing for titles for the last nine years. It would be great for the team to get some young talent who could step in and contribute right away, and for years to come as well.

Picks: #26, #45, #57.

Needs:
Interior defense and rebounding, and someone who can spell Parker at the point guard spot.

Best case scenario: Mario Chalmers is still on the board, because he's experienced and could probably get some of those Jacque Vaughn minutes fairly early in the season.

More likely scenario: The Spurs go big, and take someone like Rider's Jason Thompson.

Please don't take:
Any player that you plan to leave overseas to develop for a couple of years (*cough* Tiago Splitter *cough*). The Spurs have the pieces to win now, and they should try to get someone who can help the team this season.

Trade possibilities:
The Spurs have three picks in the draft, and have had no problem in the past making deals. I'm just not sure who they'd be willing to move (or who someone else would want) to allow them to trade up. I'd say they're likely to stick with what they've got and take their chances with their picks. Besides, they did pull Tony Parker out of their [hat] at the 28 spot, so who knows what R.C. Buford might be capable of.
