So the Sonics will play home games in Oklahoma City next year. Actually, this collection of players employed by the Sonics will be playing home games in Oklahoma City next year, but with a different mascot and a different moniker. The 'Sonics' brand is the only thing staying in Seattle, besides $45 million of Clay Bennett's money. (The other $30 million will only pay out if the city has no NBA team by 2013.)
In his press conference (webcast by KING5.com), Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels confirmed the worst fears of fans: the city caved at the last minute. There is no guarantee of a replacement team in Seattle. There are no plans for NBA expansion on the table, nor any assurance from the league that Seattle will take priority should expansion be considered.
In fact, there are no freaking new plans! Nickels said the city would go back to the Legislature to ask for permission to collect taxes for a KeyArena renovation. This would be the same Legislature that has told everyone involved -- Bennett, David Stern, previous owner and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, prospective owner and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Nickels himself -- the Legislature has told all of them "no no no." The plan, as Nickels communicated it tonight, is to do the same, toothless maneuvering that has already failed repeatedly.
Even if that works -- there's no guarantee from the NBA they'll give Seattle a team! Stern released a statement, telling Seattle it needs to secure its funding plan for a $300 million renovation by the end of 2009 in order to have a shot at a potential, hypothetical team before 2013. His statement is replete with 'ifs.'
What exactly did the city get from this settlement? To me, it looks like a whole lot of nothing.

You know Kansas City is going to fight for a new team with the new Sprint Center. Seattle had better get it going on KeyArena or their NBA life will be history.

Looks to me like Seattle got $45 million (and likely another $30 million). That isn't "nothing". Nothing is what Seattle was going to get from the judge.

$45-75 million certainly isn't nothing. What's going to be interesting to see is how Bennett runs his team once it's ensconced in Oklahoma City. One of the main arguments against this move on a practical level is the relative size of the markets. I'm worried that financial considerations are going to result in the Oklahoma City _____'s being run on the cheap, much like the Grizzlies. Speaking of which, looks like Seattle's next best chance is to get the struggling Grizzlies or in a perfect world, the economically struggling Hornets, in 5 years or so.

Yep, I knew that crap was going to start. I'm glad to say that the Grizzlies can't move ANYWHERE for a long time.

Oklahoma City can go screw themselves. Bennett and the Sonics ownership can go screw themselves. David Stern and the league front office can go screw themselves. ESPN and the sports media can go screw themselves for not reporting this. Screw the NBA players and owners for making millions and not giving a flying f*&%k about the communities they live in.

As a home grown Oklahoman, I totally resent people complaining about the sonics! We are a HUGH sport state, and We helped the Hornets for 2 years and got a great response from our city! If you don't like it...take a flying leap. We will have our NBA team and we will show all of you the it's a good thing! Our Ford Center EXCEEDED NBA requirments for an NBA team to play in, when when welcomed (with open arms)the Hornets to play here, and the Hornets liked it here! The NBA agreed that our Ford Center created a great enviroment! We will prevail and we will treat the players & the team with the utmost respect. To bad you all can't be happy for the team & their players! Sour grapes...sour grapes

I'm not going to tell Oklahoma City off or get mad at NBA fans in their state. What I wish they would understand is that they aren't getting their own team. They are getting Seattle's team... OUR team. The Seattle Supersonics, no matter what you end up calling them, will always be our Sonics, not yours. If you were such a great town, you'd get your own team. Seattle fans just got scr*wed buy wealthy owners and midwesterners who could care less about the state of Washington, Key Arena Businesses and loyal ticket holders.

That's right Nancy Ann, if Seattle wanted to keep a team then they need to do what it takes. What idiotic remarks Dean made. OKC HAS a great market. Obviously the folks who don't think so don't know a darned thing about Oklahoma. We are the most sport crazy state in the Union. The OU games are televised at the Post Office and every other business for heaven sake, just so people who have to leave their TVs during a game won't miss the plays. You people need to know what you're talking about before you try to put down OUR state. What sour grapes, I feel sorry for your ignorance.

What the hell did you expect the city of Seattle to get out of this in the end beyond some money and a few empty assurances? They were lucky to get even that. If you've been paying attention over the course of the last couple of years then you know that the NBA left Seattle in spirit awhile ago and today was little more than the funeral and burial. Much of what has gone in recent months was little more than smoke screens that were doomed to accomplish little in the way of keeping the team in Seattle as there were too few people who truly matter that wanted that to be the ultimate result. I do not expect NBA basketball to remain a huge deal in Oklahoma City once the novelty of having a permanent franchise wears off in three or four years (sorry Jan, OK is simply NOT the country's most sports crazy state for a lot of different reasons, sure got your damn nerve to sit there and talk about people and their supposed ignorance), but the Okies won't be able to say that they never got a legitimate shot at the big time now as the league got them what they wanted in the end after teasing them, perhaps unnecessarily, with the Hornets.
P.S. I'd just like to take this opportunity to tell Dizzo from post #5 to go screw himself. Sorry moron, it was only obvious that you were the next in line. No idiot, I couldn't care less what you think.

Welcome to sports business. Sure it sucks, but the city had every opportunity to keep the Sonics and they pissed it away.

Congrats to OKC for getting your wish. However, did you see the Sonics play last season? They are a mere Durrant ACL blowout from total oblivion. We should all give a big thanks to the Seattle citizens for not giving in to the pressure to use public funds to build an arena. All cities need to stop this practice or it will consume us. Seattle is the first and we should keep it going. Wait and see; this will be the biggest disaster in OKC since the Murrah building.

For as much as you type negatively about the Great state of Oklahoma, I would bet anything that you have never even set one foot on Oklahoma grounds. So you have no right to comment on how we are about sports. Its ashame when you're own pure ignorance shows just through a text comment. Dave do us all a favor, please, don't post a comment on some implied knowledge you think you have.

Oklahoma City sucks. We know that Seattle just got SCREWED big time. I am a Portland Trail Blazers fan and I am irate at what has happened here to the Sonics. If they can do that to you up north, they sure can try and SCREW Portland over someday when they feel it is time to do so.
Sonics fans got the shaft by a super greedy owner. Oklahoma will always suck in sports period.
