R.I.P. Thunder the Mascot, Unofficially

Watson previously suggested there may be a battle between the Thunder and the Warriors, considering the Warriors' mascot is named, uh, Thunder. (That's him above. Classy fellow.) According to Warriors mascot investigator Matt Steinmetz of the San Francisco Examiner, the Warriors are unofficially unexcited to share the Thunder moniker.
There's no official word from the Warriors - and, of course, there won't be (nor should there be) - but Thunder's all but finished. At this point, the absolute best Thunder can hope for is a greatly diminished role, but even that is best-case scenario.
The end of a mascot's life is always heavy, and so we pour out an Olde English tonight for Thunder. Honestly though, it's not like we're losing Benny the Bull or Harry the Hawk or even Tommy the Leprechaun. Thunder was a C-lister in the NBA mascot ranks -- let's not lose perspective in the throes of anguish. Still, it's been a rough summer in Oakland. Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Thunder. The body count keeps on risin'.
