FanHouse's Tom Ziller argues his ranking of the top 50 players in the NBA.Tim Duncan needs no explanation here. Generally regarded as one of the greatest pivots in the league's history, Duncan has dominated the NBA for the last decade like no other active player ... not even Shaq. Duncan's lows (2005-06, '07-08) are still top 10 material. His heights -- well, few could dream of reaching them.
Big Fun(damental) has a crystal defensive record. In the modern era, only Dikembe Mutombo can reasonably be considered a peer as an anchor, shotblocker, defensive quarterback, rebounder and pure stopper. The way Duncan plays defense is the way most kids in the schoolyard see Kobe play offense: simple domination. In eight of his 11 seasons, Duncan has been voted to first team All-Defense; in the other three seasons, he made the second team. He's top 20 all-time in blocks and rebounds per game ... and that's playing on a slow team in any era where offenses are favored (as opposed to the 1970s and 80s, where rules and talent levels left a lot more rebound opportunities).
If that's enough, he's one of the most potent offensive weapons ever. His usage rate is top 15 all-time, meaning less than 15 players in the history of the NBA have been responsible for a larger share of their team's offense. ! So yes, his overall offensive efficiency numbers aren't spectacular -- free throws remain the sometimes fatal flaw -- but he gets the job done at above-average rate for a ton of possessions.
Combine those unbelievable attributes with a consistently solid supporting cast and a great coaching staff, and Duncan has never missed the playoffs. (I don't suspect he'll start now.) And in the playoffs, he is typically amazing. All this overwhelming success has seriously altered draft strategies: facing off with a talent like Kevin Durant, is is not obvious Duncan is the reason Portland picked Greg Oden in '07? Dwight Howard in '04? Going big is nothing new, but putting an emphasis on finding someone who can change the game on the glass and in the defensive paint ... that stems from Duncan's long-lasting success.
Should we expect Duncan to slow down this season? His numbers will look better, I can assure you, with Manu Ginobili out a while. But the uptick on offense might be blurred -- San Antonio had trouble scoring at times last season with a full deck; without Manu, teams will do everything they can to limit Duncan and Tony Parker, and all that attention could wear Big Fun out. Will that affect his defense? Or will Kurt Thomas' presence more than make up the difference? I won't bet against Duncan, that's for sure. Another MVP-type season is as sure as the tide.
NBA Top 50
No. 50, Andris Biedrins, Warriors

Very confusing - 4 spots left and we still have Kobe, Lebron, Johnson, Garnett and Paul to go.
I guess this guy really doesn't appreciate KG's game.

@Ridley
I think you better forget about Johnson there....
And I'm kind of wondering if you really think he belongs with the other players you just mentioned, or the other top ten on this list for that matter.
I would personally put Duncan above Garnett, who I'm sure is No. 4, just because he is more discipline than emotion, not to mention tested. With near-full hand of rings.

Great player , no question about it;
To be fair, great organization as well but the Spurs
ala Michael Jordan with chicago has been helping
Duncan to the max, in fact his first ring with the admiral
David Robinson was expected,firm.
Following such they got Manu, parker, plus, plus and let's
not forget the Spurs have one of the better coaches in the league;
I guess that is the way you build up a team that delivers
to the max, the knicks should be paying attention to such;
Bottom line , a great player one of the best.

Joe Johnson
A lot of the jokers who post on here would rather harp on guys who should probably be on the list but wouldn't crack anyone's top 30 (i.e. Vince Carter, Joe Johnson).
I'm thinking they can't add much more to the conversation than pointing out in every single ranking from 20 down that certain irrelevant players weren't included.
Changing direction, after his first exhibition game I'm ready to put Greg Oden in the top 20. Blazers might be a decent Vegas futures longshot before word gets out.

as the new season is about to begin, i would put duncan at the top of this list ,and the one dominating aspect of duncan is that he is the ultimat team player,and as ateam player you really dont have to hog the ball whenever you want like some of the selfish plyers that have made it on thsi list,and the one prime example of this phylosophy is the great bill russell,he wasnt the greatest but the grestest team player of all time and that is even above mj,so in regards to mr duncan he is just below mr russell as one of the best team players of all time

This spot should've been garnetts. Because Duncan is just better. He had better numbers last season and just cuz boston won, thanks to posey, he going to be higher on the list. Duncan is a better anchor and all around player than garnett. There is a reason Duncan has FOUR rings and Garnett has ONE.

Joe Johnso... oh Joe Johnson, yeah. hahaha. That explains the confusion. Top 5??? You've got to be kidding me...
Don't forget Rudy Fernandez, the Blazers really got some great reviews after their first preseason game.

Just an idea for discussion. Duncan is 5. Take him off the spurs, and put one of the 4 players listed ahead of him in his place. Are the Spurs better with that new player, or worse? I think these guys are the players that they are in large part by the players by their side. The spurs are all about team chemistry, and Duncan is ingredient number 1.

Yes. I also like Time Duncan. Even though he is not a flashy player... he always amaze on how he move fundamentally to the basket.
By the way... Timmy has a 100% 3-point field goal percentage in the last 2007-2008 NBA Season. ;)
