The Oklahoma City Thunder, struck by the notion that second year players Kevin Durant and Jeff Green might end up being pretty good players, decided to exercise the option on both for next year.
Yes, it was a pretty simple decision. Thanks for asking.
General manager Sam Presti announced the moves Thursday. NBA rookies get two-year contracts with teams having the option to pick up a third season. As much as we might like to dislike the notion of a team in Oklahoma City -- Clay Bennett is, after all, quite evil -- in Green and Durant the Thunder have a pair of players that are going to be exciting to watch for quite some time, provided the team can keep them together.
Durant averaged 20.3 points and 4.3 rebounds last season before the team relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma City during the offseason. Green averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds.
So, yeah, not exercising a freebie option for both of them under their rookie contracts would have been a pretty smart move.
