As Tom Ziller pointed out over the weekend, rumblings of a three-way deal between the Knicks, Blazers and Clippers surfaced a few days ago. Exact details of the alleged trade were never clear, but it seemed to hinge on David Lee (and potentially Eddy Curry) heading to Portland, Marcus Camby returning to New York and, well, someone going to the Clippers. Now that a couple of days have passed without movement, the trade appears to be dead in the water -- and if you believe the parties involved, it may not have ever been alive in the first place.
Jason Quick of the Oregonian said last night that he's "been told by multiple people, multiple times that this talk has zero legs to it. Zero." Donnie Walsh was even more blunt, telling Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News, "That stuff is made up." And Mike Dunleavy? He opted for sarcasm, telling the Los Angeles Daily News, "Oh yeah, I'm looking to trade 20 rebound (a night) guys every day.'"
But even if this monster of a deal was too good to be true, don't rule out a smaller Blazers/Knicks deal in the future. Marc Berman of the New York Post cites a league source who claims the Blazers are still desperate for a big man and just might be willing to consider Eddy Curry, who, as luck would have it, is on the verge of returning to action.
From where I sit, Portland's front court depth seems to be a strength and not a weakness, but it's possible the team is looking to hedge their bets in case Greg Oden can't stay healthy the rest of the season.
