PHOENIX -- The 2009 NBA All-Star game was largely lacking in the amount of exciting plays that we're used to seeing from the midseason exhibition. But the few that did happen came mostly from Shaquille O'Neal, so despite playing just 11 minutes, he was named the game's co-MVP, along with the evening's leading scorer, Kobe Bryant. The West beat the East by a score of 146-119, but that was beside the point. The story going in was the fact that Shaq, Kobe, and Phil Jackson were reunited together for the first time since O'Neal's ugly divorce from the Lakers after the 2004 season. And honestly, the only time the game was remotely exciting was when Shaq was on the floor, which seemed like it wasn't very long at all.
For the first half of the game, there was really no flow and the referees were a little too whistle-happy to let anything get started. Shaq opened the game's introductions by performing with the dance group Jabbawockeez, mask and all, and for a while it looked like that was going to be the highlight of the entire evening. Teams were in the penalty with 5:09 remaining in the half -- It was that bad.
While Kobe came out firing from the opening tip, and took 13 shots to get 13 points by halftime, Shaq impacted the game in spurts. Kobe played 30 minutes and led everyone with 27 points, but Shaq's 17 on 8-of-9 shooting in limited action were by far more exciting to watch.
"We wanted to be aggressive," Bryant said. "We lost last year and we wanted to make sure we came out here and played the game hard, and come out with a win."

It seems that in these games, the MVP is up for grabs to anyone that wants to play a little harder than everyone else. That was Kobe in this one, but it didn't quite work out that way, at least 100 percent. That's because Shaq showcased his ball-handling skills, which culminated with a give and go between him and Chris Paul that ended up being the game's signature highlight.
After the trophy was handed out (Kobe is letting Shaq take the award home) and the two sat side-by-side at the post-game press conference, naturally the question came up of whether or not the two wished that they could still be playing together.
"No," Kobe said, to a room full of laughter. "No," O'Neal immediately followed, without missing a beat as the laughs continued.
"It felt like old times," O'Neal said. "I miss those times. He was really looking for me, especially when we went to a pick-and-roll and they had [Rashard Lewis] on me."
Kobe, however, immediately put a damper on the idea of the night becoming overly sentimental.
"We're not going to go back to the room and watch Steel Magnolias or something like that," Bryant said. "You know what I'm saying? Crying and all that stuff. We had a good time. That's all," he said with a smile.Players splitting the MVP trophy is by no means common at All-Star games, but neither is a situation where two of the game's biggest stars -- who engaged in a very public feud for at least a couple of years -- are reunited after winning three championships together. But for at least one night, everything was just fine between Kobe and Shaq.
And since the two are no longer actual teammates, the authenticity of their friendship is something that needn't be questioned.

Bryant and O'Neal as co-MVP's? How sweet, how cozy, how phoney, manufactured, and transparent. This just goes to show you that the NBA is not about sports anymore. It is approaching pro-rasslin in the made up story lines and showbiz mentality of Larry O'Brien. Shaq qnd Kobe as co-MVP's, who writes this crap?

Apparently you didn't watch the All-Star game. Shaq and Kobe weren't given co-MVPs because the NBA was trying to create some feeling of nostalgia. They were given co-MVPs because they were both the most valuable players in the game. Shaq missed his first shot and then didn't miss after that and he also made one of, if not the best play in the game (the give and go starting with the pass Shaq threw between Dwight Howard's legs). Also, Kobe was the leading scorer (27 pts) on a winning west team so he deserved the MVP as well. It's not like this is the first time the co-MVP has been awarded. (In 2000 it was Shaq and Tim Duncan, 1993 Malone and Stockton, 1959 Elgin Baylor and Bob Petit). Although it seemed too good to be true, the fact of the matter is, both men really did deserve the award thus it was given to them.

timjofred, you are on the money. lopjackie21, what a fantasy world you must live in. ... What a complete blow job of a game (and game story). See why there are only three comments on this game (four now, counting mine). This is all complete BS. O'Neal didn't even deserve to be in the game. And as for Bryant (what, we're on a first-name basis with this guy now), just another gunner firing shots every chance he gets without any regard for his teammates. And let's not forget, absolutely no one plays defense in this game, not that they play much defense in the regular season either. The NBA is a complete joke. Its all-star game is about fourth on the legitimate chain, behind baseball, the NHL and NFL, in that order. Let's see where the TV ratings end up, Daytona vs. NBA all-stars. Daytona wins about 10 to 1.

It looks like the Big Cactus is slyly trying to work his way back to L.A. He did everything but sing Kumbiyya with Kobe on Sunday night. I forsee
Shaq getting shipped off to the Lakers for Lamaar
Odom (who is as irregular as the stock market).
Shaq and Kobe is several times better than Shaq and what is left of the Phoenix Suns. As for Amare, he is best staying put, if you got rid of the Diesel he will play MUCH better and finally become the player he has shown flashes of. The next step should be (but won't be done) to hire a coach who can teach defense (Hubie Brown, Mike Fratello, or a host of others).
It will be interesting to see who takes over from Terry Porter.

Bill, please avoid to talk about the NBA cuz you absolutely don't know ANYTHING about it. Shaq deserved to be in the ASG and anyone who watches the NBA knows it. Stop embarrassing yourself because you are the real joke. And he deserved to be MVP along with Kobe. No question about it. And actually they played defense, especially in the first half so get your facts straight please. As far as the ratings things, WHO CARES? NASCAR is on broadcast tv, and the NBA ASG is on cable so it's obvious that NASCAR will get bigger ratings. But does it even matter? And the NBA All-Star weekend blows away every other all-star game. It's not even close. And the NFL Pro Bowl ahead of the NBA? Are you serious? Players in the Pro Bowl don't even care to be there.
I wonder how come you can make comments about a game you didn't even watch. I absolutely can't stand people like you.

Voting breakdown by Mike Trudell
"There is some intrigue behind how the vote was awarded and why Kobe and Shaq split the honor.
The media accounts for 75 percent of the total vote, which in this case was nine out of 12 votes.
The final three votes came as a result of fan voting, with the top vote-getter earning two points and the runner-up getting a point.
Alas, Shaq won the media vote 5-4 over Kobe, while Bryant claimed the fan vote as O’Neal finished second (2-1 Kobe).
That gave both players six votes in an almost comical twist of fate."

Credit Bill Cartwright, former Bulls head coach, current Phoenix assitant coach, with Shaq`s resurgent good basketball play. Shaq is even shooting over 60% from the line, which, for most anyone else would be lousy, but for Shaq isn`t half bad. Yes, Kobe tried to throw the game early, throwing up tons of missed shots instead of assist passes to Ming, 2 pts., and Tim, 6 pts., and Phil let him get away with it, but the East was just too weak, intentionally flouting their own rules, picking a back up small forward, not center, then replacing him with a back up point guard, not center. Two of the three best point guards missed the game, Paul barely made it, Williams and Calderon did not. Porter should not be fired from Phoenix, but if he is, Majerle, in house, and Fratello, an announcer, would be good replacements. A shame we didn`t get to see Ming, Shaq, Pau, Dirk, and Tim all at the same time. Shaq played well with Ming the other time they paired, and won the all star game for the west. He puts the power in power forward! Now the nba needs to expand into a least a half dozen western markets, both to share costs in this economic depression, and to ease some good big men into the east, which only has one, Howard.

So this goes to show that there was not a conspiracy. Hey Coach Bill, you may want to think twice before saying it was a conspiracy or, like someone else said, a PR stunt. The real joke here are those conspiracy theorists who didn't even watch the game to begin with. Grow up.

check my previous post. The media and fans voted for the MVP, genious, so maybe you should talk to them (or you can talk to me since I voted Shaq) instead of accusing the league.

"The only reason they go is for the money and the NBA should be banned from TV." Uh huh.
By that line of reasoning, we shouldn't allow ANYTHING on television, because almost ALL of the programming is created to make money. Don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT. Jesus effin' Christ, grow the hell up.

I think the NBA all star game being televised on TNT pretty much tells it all. Not many watch the little show or care much of the senseless game, unless of course your under 14 years old and you like the circus. As far as splitting the MVP award, I agree it was nothing more but to have a little controversy,,,yawn,,,with, again, Kobe and Shaq involved, which, after such a display of, dare I say, basketball, it was the only thing anyone could come up with to over look the actual game and give it any kind of publicity, at all. And, you Laker fans had better hope that Bynum comes back, and Kobe wins it all this year, cause this is his very last year to have that opportunity. As far as Shaq, great career, but, all things must come to an end. With luck, he'll "entertain" us for another year and then move on. Bynum, of course barring injuries, is going to be taking over for a very long time. And Lebron at 24 will rule this league for the next 10 years or so.
