Since moving out of the front office and into the head coaching role back on December 8, Kevin McHale has done a fantastic job of turning the Timberwolves around. Glen Taylor (the team's owner) has been so pleased, in fact, that he wants McHale to return as the head coach next season.McHale has yet to decide if he'll indeed remain the team's coach, but what is clear is that his former position of running the team is no longer available.
In an interview that took place during halftime of Minnesota's Sunday night loss to the Nuggets, Taylor mentioned that his team would be looking for a single person to head up the operations, but said that McHale would not be that person.
"He's not one of the candidates," Taylor said.
Taylor also mentioned that he expects McHale to stay on as head coach, but that McHale has repeatedly refused to commit beyond this season -- which would be a shame for the organization.
After the T'Wolves started the season with a record of 4-23, McHale took over as the team's coach and made an immediate impact. Minnesota won 12 of its next 16 games, and was extremely competitive for a long while thereafter, even after injuries began to leave them without their most talented players.
It's unclear whether or not Mchale would be up for another season (or more) of the grueling schedule that's required of an NBA head coach, especially given the fact that he might be more interested in returning to a front office position. But McHale's success level as a GM would be described as lukewarm at best, and he may have already discovered that he's better at coaching a team than he is at putting one together.

With McHale coaching AlJeff&Love, and a decent GM in the front office, these Timberwolves could be a special young team. Let's hope that the ownership finds the right match!
