Cherry Picking recaps yesterday's playoff action. The Jazz did indeed beat the Lakers in Game 3 of their first round playoff match-up, and cut L.A.'s lead in the series to two games to one in the process. But just because Utah was able to squeak out a two-point victory at home basically at the buzzer, that doesn't mean that suddenly we now have a series on our hands.
Because we don't. Look a little more closely at how this one went down, and you'll see that so much had to go wrong for L.A. and right for Utah, that this game was the exception to the rule, and not the rule itself.
Consider the following, and you tell me if any of this, much less all of it, is likely to happen ever again, much less in Game 4 on Saturday:
-- Andrew Bynum picked up a foul on his team's first offensive possession. When his second came less than four minutes later, Bynum was sent to the bench, and was barely able to stay on the floor at all the rest of the game. Bynum played just seven total minutes, and finished with four points and two rebounds, while picking up five personal fouls.
-- Pau Gasol, normally a reliable free throw shooter who shot better than 78 percent from the line for the season, barely drew iron on his first attempt and finished 4-of-10 on the night. The poor performance could have been a continuation from Game 2, where he missed two clutch free throws with under 30 seconds left that would have sealed the game for his team.
-- Kobe Bryant shot 5-of-24 from the field on a combination of poor choices and misses on shots that he normally makes. He didn't score his first points of the game until there were just over five minutes left in the second quarter.
-- The Lakers' bench -- everyone except Lamar Odom, that is -- combined to shoot just 2-for-12 on the night. (Okay, so that isn't exactly a novelty.)
-- Carlos Boozer had 15 rebounds by halftime and finished with 22, tying a Jazz postseason record also held by Karl Malone.
-- After the Lakers put up 113 and 119 points in their first two games respectively, they managed just 86 in Game 3.
And after all of that, the Jazz needed a shot at the buzzer to come away with the two-point win.
Call it a hunch, but most of these things probably aren't going to happen on Saturday -- including the part where Utah leaves with the victory.
This series is over in five.
Doing Lines
Utah out-rebounded the Lakers 55-40 in Game 3, thanks in no small part to Carlos Boozer's 22 boards. He also had 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, good for the team lead in both categories.
Paul Pierce started off on fire for the Celtics, and single-handedly made sure that his team wouldn't go down 2-1 to a feisty young Bulls team. Pierce calmly came out and hit his first six shots, good for 13 points and enough to give Boston an 11-point lead that they continued to build on the rest of the night.
Derrick Rose? Not so much. On the night he received his Rookie of the Year hardware, Rose managed just nine points, two assists, and seven turnovers in 33 minutes of action.
The Spurs' offense was virtually nonexistent in Dallas. How bad was it? San Antonio had scored just 42 points through three quarters, and in the +/- category, the team's starting five averaged a -26. Erick Dampier? He was +37.
Watching Film
Deron Williams' game-winner over the Lakers. Losing Derek Fisher was the easy part -- anyone can do that. But fading to his right while shooting over the long, outstretched arm of Lamar Odom as time is winding down? That was special.
On the Blockquote
MySanAntonio.com:
"They kicked our ass every which way but loose," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We didn't play well at either end of the court, and they had a lot to do with it."Basketball John at SLC Dunk:
We had a guy behind us that said he couldn't see when we stood up. I was polite and just nodded. ... The man explained to me that he had been going to Jazz games for 23 years and that this was the first time anyone has stood up in front on him. What? That was the first time, ever? Right.Random Pic of the Day
Well, as you can imagine, we stood almost the entire third and fourth quarters.

I don't disagree with the point of this, but I didn't see a similar write up when the Blazers eeked out a 4 point win on their home court against the Rockets. And that's not even considering that Rudy Fernandez out of bounds phantom foul at the end that could have given the Rockets the win... Of course since it's the Lakers, you have to be an apologist right? They are after all "THE BEST TEAM EVER" right?

what Laker fans know and have noticed is an ugly pattern that doesn't bode well for a ring...their inability to keep a large lead late in the game. Last night they were up by 13 late...then they lose by 2...
How many times over the season have we seen that? Far too many for a team with ring aspirations...after this latest one, we might as well tell Cavs to go pick up the rings...no one in their conference will beat them and the Lakers, have shown 1 thing ALL season...that they have grooved the pattern of giving away late leads into losing...
this latest one should not have happened to a team with a healthy squad against a diminished squad...and while the Lakers may go on to win this series...sooner or later this pattern will beat them...it won't be another team but themselves that keep them from the ring...

I am a Portland fan, but like to recognize some of the realities of this great game, for example; Portland is in a very difficult match up with Houston, they are probably the toughest match up out side of playing Dallas. But the Trailblazers on the other hand seem to have some advantages when playing the Fakers. This has been very evident through out this season when the two teams have met despite one game at the start of the season. But the Sports writers in most of the media circles who really know less than most avid fans around the league only look at things that really don't matter, like market share.
Take the win in UTAH for example, last time I looked a win is still a win, no one is making excuses when the Lakers blow a team off the floor, and so no one should ever underestimate and discount a legitimate win. The Lakers, if they are so good, should never have been in the position to loose at all, that is just a simple fact. Do not be surprised if UTAH doesn't tie the series up at 2 a piece, they deserve a little more respect, they have some players who have demonstrated that they will not give up. Sometimes that is all it takes.
It is very easy to sit in a cheap seat and push pen on a piece of paper and scribble down an opinion about who is the most popular players in the league. It is a more gutsy and creative journalist who will give you some intelligent insight to the actual strategies of the game.

You're right that the same combination of factors will not happen again, but your Laker bullet-points can all be summed up as a recurring theme with the heading - "No Mental Toughness, No Killer Instinct, Going Soft".
-Call it a hunch-, but the odds are that this WILL happen again. The script will be different and you'll have to change your list of excuses, but the theme will be the same.
The Lakers might have enough talent to still win the title this year, but don't plan on a cakewalk.

As a great player Kobe is, I can't help to think sometimes that he gets really bothered by a better defender and just opt to shoot jumpers on
key possessions. It's great if he's having a great shooting nights. But it will be nice to see him take it to the hole (especially when the other team is already in penalty).

It seems that the Lakers are not playing at full bore. I think they're trying to win with minimal effort. Hopefully, last night was a wake up call!

If any MORON on this blog thinks that LA is going to lose to UTAH, they must be smoking crack. What they need to do is just step on the gas and not let up. I think that will happen from now on. Phil and Kobe will not let this happen. LA in five.

Hey nab, I can't find a single comment on this blog saying that LA will lose the series to Utah. You might want to learn to read before you call anyone else a moron. What everyone is saying is exactly the same as what you are saying (i.e., not letting up on the gas).

Does anyone see something wrong with this picture? Cleveland will be praised if they sweep Detroit but think about this.
Utah Jazz record 48 wins and 34 loses +14 above 500
Detroit season record 39 wins and 43 loses -4 below 500

I don't think anyone is suggesting that this has become a series. But before you get too busy pimping the Lakers and trying to deflate any budding, Utah hopes, it might be good to remember:
a--this is # 1 seed vs. a # 8,
b--Utah limped into the playoffs,
c--Utah is playing without Okur...
this shouldn't be a series... if the Lakers are all you hope they are, they should have swept Utah.
I know, I know... they're the only team to beat the Cavs in Cleveland, but if you're thinking about rings, your Lakers better play better than they did in game 2 or game 3.

Honestly, Nab, you're the one who makes no sense. In addition to being rude and foul-mouthed, you still seem incapable of comprehending what anyone writes.
1. No one here, including me, has said that Utah will win the series. (Try reading all the posts again). What me -and you- and everyone else are saying is that the Lakers need to keep up 100% effort for the entire game.
2. In case you were unaware, my original post was in response to the article written by Brett Pollakoff. The only way my response could possibly make no sense to you is if you are not intelligent enough to understand it......smile. Either that, or I'm wasting my time answering a 12-year-old.
3. When the hell did I ever say anything about the Western conference? (It's like you're on another planet). But if you were to ask my opinion, I agree that the Western conference is definitely deeper (even though the East may have 2 of the top 3 NBA teams).
4. Why would I need to make any excuses? Excuses for what? Really, what the hell are you talking about?
I haven't said anything that Phil Jackson hasn't said, but I guess you're smarter than him, right?.......smile.
As I said in my original post (and stand by it) -- "The Lakers might have enough talent to still win the title this year, but don't plan on a cakewalk." In context, the word "still" was used as to say "despite their less than 100% effort".
In case you remain unable to understand me -- what I'm saying is that the Lakers SHOULD be able to breeze to the finals, but because they have a tendency to go soft at times, there will probably be some more bumps along the way.

Ya GLENNASS, I might be foul mouth, but the LAKERS kicked ass tonight. Don't get on here and try to be someone you're not, talking all high and mighty. Truth is you don't know anything about basketball. Have you ever played the game, I have. JOHN JAY H.S District Champs 1972, 12 ppg and 5 apg. Those times stay with you all your life. Never said I was the best, never stated until my senior year. Now you tell me a story of how you know sports.
