When it rains, it pours; and then you find out you have a leak and your roof guy is taking offers from the house down the street. Tom Thibodeau has been an integral part of the Boston resurgence. Thibodeau is considered a defensive genius, and the Celtics' defense has been dominant, even in the face of aging superstars and injuries. Doc Rivers is great at finding cool phrases and inpsiring his team to play hard all the time, but if you want defensive Xs and Os, it's Thibodeau that may be the man behind the curtain.
After the Celtics got worked over Sunday night in Game 7 by the Magic, they probably weren't expecting more bad news this soon.
Well, while it's not catastrophic (that was the Garnett injury), it's still raining.
The Boston Herald reports that Thibodeau is interviewing with the Philadelphia 76ers for their head coaching vacancy. Thibodeau's been a hot head coach candidate for several years. That tends to happen when you've had your team in the top 10 in team defense 15 times. If there's a book on containing a player, be it LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Joe Johnson ... well, OK, maybe not Joe Johnson, but all those other guys, he's got it. He probably wrote it.
Thibodeau has pursued other opportunities before, but with a loaded roster, cap space, and flexiibility, the Sixers could be too good to pass up. Then it could come down to Thibodeau versus Dwane Casey, who's also being interviewed.
Remember what The Crow said, Boston. Can't rain all the time.
