Once upon a time, Vince Carter and Rasheed Wallace were almost teammates -- the former Tar Heels missed each other at North Carolina by just one season. A decade and a half later, Carter hopes to make up for lost time, openly campaigning for Wallace to sign with the Orlando Magic. "He's a veteran guy who knows how to play the game first and foremost," Carter said on Saturday. "He's an unbelievable shooter. He's very smart and he's a motivator. Just from playing against him, he knows how to play basketball and he makes very [few] mistakes on the court. So, I think that's big for our team.
"A guy like that who makes [few] mistakes at that level can get the team over the hump, because he's been there. Not only has he been in the Finals, he's won one. He knows what it takes to win. So, hopefully, we can bring him aboard, and I'm doing all that I can."
The fact Orlando is interested in Wallace isn't a surprise -- Tim Povtak first reported Orlando's interest last month -- but it can't hurt to have a fellow Tar Heel applying pressure.
Although Wallace played only two years at UNC, anyone who's heard his constant trash talking with teammates in the locker room knows he's fiercely proud of his school. In fact, it's been said by more than a few observers that the biggest reason Larry Brown commanded so much respect from Wallace during his time with the team was because he, too, was a disciple of Dean Smith.
While many presume the Celtics to be the favorite to land Wallace, I won't be surprised in the least if he lands with the Magic. In fact, I floated the idea last September and again in April long before Carter's arrival:
He'd fits into the team's offensive philosophy of surrounding Howard with three-point shooters, but he can still get his points on the post when he wants to. More importantly, teaming up with Howard in the post would give the Magic one of the most daunting defenses in the league. Who knows if this is actually a possibility, but Wallace has gone out of his way to praise and help Howard in the past.Is it a possibility? So long as Wallace understands that no team is likely to pay him more than the mid-level exception, the Magic have just as much of a chance at landing him than the Celtics or Spurs. (In fact, the Magic and Spurs might actually have a leg up on the Celtics, at least when you consider the states of Florida and Texas don't have a personal income tax.)
It seems like most of the rumors involving Wallace have centered on the Celtics, but that could just be due to massive echo chamber that is Boston's sports media. If the salaries being offered are equal and Wallace is solely interested in winning (while sticking with his preferred style of play), it seems likely he'd choose the Magic, a young team on the rise and the reigning Eastern Conference champs, as opposed to the Celtics or Spurs, where he'd be just another aging veteran desperately hoping to prop the window of success open one more year.

Who is Matt Watson and how long has he worked for the Magic? Young and up and coming team? The Magic. Do you think thety are better with VC than Hedo? What are you smoking, Magic fairy powder. The Celtics with a health KG will be the team to beat. The only rwason the Lakers had such an easy road is because of the KG injury, If not is banner # 18 in bean town. And Rasheed knows it
thank u theirs no way in hell he should go to da magic n hedo's been havin carear years these last two seasons wit magic they aint shit witout him i dont care if they have Howard Carter Nelson and Lewis they wouldn't go no where they gave up gortat,Lee, Alston and some other dude i cant think of his name so their a week team we all no Lee and Alston is a big deal wit dat magic team they wouldn't have made it to da finals hell to da celtics if they didnt have Lee and Alston and den Gortat is a bak up center now hes gone and a other guy left to a 4 for 1 trade and they lost Hedo i think thats 5 so come on I say come to boston U got the BIG 3 + rondo Glen Davis on da bench dat improved so much, Leon Powe who could be staying Eddie House and Kendrick Perkins will be on da bench boston already has da best startin 5 now but if Wallace comes to boston their would be no doubt in anyones mind like u said boston would've won it last year if they had a healthy KG wallace knows it and come on yo Rondo had 5 or 6 triple doubles sounds (GREAT) to me no one will be able to stop celtics and marbury left i dont really care for him anyways and thats more money now and i heard Grant Hill is wanting to come to boston do u hear me u got Pierce,KG,Allen,Rondo,Wallace,Davis,Perkins, possibly Powe,House and Hill thats a good team rite dere and i been watchin pruit u neva no maybe this could be his year to shine and the other players on da celtics bench is ok accept mikki moore hes garbage but Celtics have a Great chance of winning think about whos losing and whos winning. Magic basically lost dere team dat went to da finals last year. Who did boston lose (Marbury) haha u can have em. We gonna be a great team DO U HEAR ME WE WOULD'VE WON LAST YEAR IF WE HAD KG NOW DAT WE GOT HIM BACK AND IF WE GET WALLACE AND HILL WE GONNA BE LIKE DAT BULLS TEAM BACK IN DA 90'S 72-10 TRUST ME.
The problem with all these RUMORS is that they have been repeated so much that now even you writers think he can ONLY get the MLE when thats just not true. Before the free agent signing period began the reason no one thought a power house like Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, San Antonio, etc. is because they wouldnt be able to afford him because he can get more then the MLE from other teams. Now IF he choses he doesnt want more money and wants a ring THEN one of these teams had a chance , but dont just say he is only gonna be able to get a MLE max from anyone! And if he is only gonna take the MLE i PROMISE you Cleveland, with Bron and veteran voice Shaq, has a much of a chance as Boston and Orlando....
No disrespect Cliffy, but the Lakers did'nt have an easy road until they met the Magic. They had to go through Utah, Houston, and Denver, all tough teams. They beat Boston with KG and Cleveland in Cleveland, which no other team did. They have added the toughest guy in the league which was their biggest weakness and Andrew Bynum is finally getting healthy. No disrespect to Boston, I actually have a lot of respect for the way they battled through their injuries, but even with Rasheed, the Lakers will be tough as hell and the team to beat. You take Rasheed, we'll take Ron Ron.
Funny how you celtic fans kept saying right after KG's injury that they would still win without him and wouldn't use that as an excuse for losing. Until they did. LOSE that is. Now it's all because KG was hurt. If they are as powerful a team as you claim them to be, then losing one of their best shouldn't have stopped them. What stopped them was pitiful performances from Pierce and Allen who obviously proved they are far from the best. So keep those pitiful players and we'll see how far you go even with Rasheed. The LAKERS have nothing to worry about or fear from this team.
