When you miss out on grabbing Rasheed Wallace in the free-agent market, next best thing: Rasheed Wallace "Lite."That's how you'd have to characterize the Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly meeting with free agent power forward Channing Frye on Monday ... one day after learning that Wallace wouldn't be coming their way.
Frye is certainly no Wallace, who will be heading to Boston. But both are the kind of big men the Cavaliers are looking for: a four who is capable of stepping out and making shots on the perimeter to space the floor for newly acquired center Shaquille O'Neal.
Call it the "Big Prerequisite."
Frye played in 63 games last season for the Blazers, averaging just under 12 minutes per game. He averaged 4.2 points per game, shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc.
Anderson Varejao, who logged a lot of minutes at power forward for the Cavaliers last season, is an unrestricted free agent. And he would seem to have less value for the Cavs now that they have O'Neal.
Wonder if Raef LaFrentz is healthy.

These guys just don't like Varajeo. Why not resign him instead of Frye, the money can't be that different.
The Cavs would like to re-sign Varejao and maybe they will, but it depends on what he is expecting. His contract demands have been way off base in the past and that doesn't appear to have changed.Varejao is just not worth 8-9 mil per year like he thinks he is.He opted out @ 6.2 mil,and even that's probably more than he's worth. The Cavs need a PF that can shoot to create space for Shaq.Andy is NOT a shooter. If the Cavs can find a trade partner,a sign and trade involving Andy is also possible.I like Varejao and would like to keep him,but not at his price. - Frye is still young and has potential if in the right situation, and Cleveland would be a good fit for him.
FLOW: Varejao is wanting a 3-5 year deal at about 8-9 mil per year. That's just not gonna happen from ANY team. This guy needs to come to grips with reality if he wants to play this year.I would think that Frye could be had for less than half that price.
