One positive ramification of Jason Kidd ditching Dallas after 1-1/2 years in Maverick blue would have been that Mark Cuban and team management could finally have admitted that the Kidd-Devin Harris trade was an absolute mistake. But no, we're due three more years of Cuban barking in a hurricane, as Kidd has re-signed with Dallas through 2011-12. The Dallas Morning News reports the deal will pay Kidd $25 million over that span. The Knicks had allegedly been offering $18 million over three years (the mid-level exception), which means the Mavericks paid an extra $2.3 million per season than anyone else realistically could for the 36-year-old guard. And, if you're keeping track, Harris, the now 26-year-old point guard Kidd replaced, the kid who is by most objective standards a superior player to Kidd, will be paid over the next three years a total of ... $25.3 million. Well done, Mavericks.

Fact is, however, that in this summer the Mavs did not have much choice, no matter how you evaluate the Harris trade. Not resigning Kidd would almost certainly have resulted in missing the playoffs, as there is no adequate replacement PG on the market. In this case they might as well have traded Dirk as well. Resigning Kidd has two benefits: a) It guarantees to have a capable leader at PG, over the years where Dirk is still in his prime. This is as currently constructed still a functioning playoff team, and an entertaining one as well. No need to dismantle that. b) Kidd's and Dirk's combined presence might be of help in attracting another superstar in 2010.

Ziller, you're an idiot, probably a Knicks fan, too. NOBODY in their right mind would claim that Devin Harris is as good a player as Jason Kidd (unless, of course, you're an idiot and/or a Knicks fan).

And you Mr. Tom Ziller, continue to say that Harris is the superior player of the two. Saying otherwise will mean that Harris is in fact not the better player. Right? Everyone keeps looking at Harris' individual performance this year, what about what his impact was on the Nets? Two straight playoff no- shows? An All-Star, yes, (with the Nets) but a superior player than Kidd, I think not. Let's not start with individual accomplishments, you wouldn't want to go there. For those (like you) who are blind to see, Harris wouldn't put up the same numbers if he was still with Dallas. Believe it!

The fact remains that the Mavs gave up too much for JKIDD. JKIDD is a good player now but was a great player back when the Nets were in the finals. The whole purpose for the trade was for the Mavs to make it to the finals. It didnt work. I don't see the Mavs doing much of anything in the West( certainly not making the Finals). Entertaining--perhaps. Winning---not this year.
