I'm about as cynical as they get when it comes to Allen Iverson (ahem, Exhibit A), but the raw emotion he displays in this video of him talking to student athletes at his summer camp completely caught me off guard. Iverson has performed this "me against the world" monologue dozens of times in his 13-year career, but this is the first time I can recall him revealing just how much he's been affected by criticism.
Should it change your feelings about the man? Not necessarily; truth be told, he brings a lot of the negativity surrounding him upon himself. But at the very least, it should remind you that behind the "tough as nails" exterior, the man is not a caricature. He's been handsomely rewarded for the public life that he's chosen, but having all of his shortcoming dissected by millions of people every day of his career has clearly taken its toll. everybody doubted allen iverson because they want him to be a different player in their eyes he just felt comfortable being himself but critics and the media or probably even ordinary people just like you putting him down because of where he comes from
He doesn't listen.... he doesn't win BIG. That is how it goes.
Nobody doubts his tenacity and love for the game... he gets beat up physically every night by guys much bigger than him, but he comes back even harder the next play... thumbs up.
What Iverson never got as a player is to make his team better... he gets his points at the expense of a lot of shots.... doesn't help his team win, and doesn't many people don't love him.
Who cares what people think.. well now he does at the end of a career.
You mean to tell me that Jordan would have won a championship with the roster AI had in Philly? I THINK NOT!
AI is human I guess
This guy is one tough cookie. A very small man in a very big mans game!! He beat guys that were 2 times his size. Always put out and left it all on the court. Maybe his mama and papa did not do a good job raising him(Manners and being Humble)but he sure does click with young boys and girls of ALL color and race...
he is an arrogant scrub
No he's not
you know nothing about basketball...your a scrub
What a little crybaby! he cried like a little girlie man! how embarrassing. Little wussy! Be a man sissy girl!
And pass the ball once in a while ball hoggin nancy girl!
He is not "The Answer", he should be called "The Cancer".
Joe Dumars is a buffoon for the trade he made for "The Cancer". Obviously, Denver got the absolute best of that deal.
Jerry, as for Joe Dumars, it was always admitted the Iverson/Billups trade was never about prefering Iverson`s style over Billups` substance, it was about clearing the salary to allow the Pistons to sign young starters like Ben Gordon, to replace Billups, and Charlie Villanuea, to replace Wallace, etc., when Iverson would be let go at the end of the season. They still need to sign a replacement for McDyess, whom the let go to San Antonio, and Hamilton, still on the roster, but have done well so far in replacing has been quality with young starter, though not all star, quality.
Who wrote this article? Cynical about Iverson? Oh, please, dude, who the hell are you? Is your life perfect? Same goes for the other morons on this board.
skill wise- unreal. team player- awful. attitude of me against the world ultimatley hurts him because although it makes him compete hard the chip on his shoulders prevents him from being put in a leadership role like jordan bird russell or kobe. he will play his nba career in a bubble never really realizing how to become a winner.
everybody thats perfect raise your hand...exactly...put urself in his shoes whereas every wrong thing you do is made public and the good you do is ignored...at the end of the day he's a man that bleeds like we do puts his pants on 1 leg at a time like everybody else...the only difference is his mistakes made public...put him on a squad with Pippen and Rodman...or with Kobe and Shaq...or with KG and Pierce and see what he can do...Who did he ever have?...Glen Robinson-Eric Snow-Matt Geiger...please!!...You got athletes who've taken steroids...killed folks driving drunk...and countless other crimes...what did he everdo that was so bad that anytime he does something people dont agree with folk make it there goal to try to bring this man down...check yourself
I don't think people wish him bad things... I think people wish he was a little more coachable. Everyone makes mistakes... the question is has he learned from them and is he teaching the kids to be coachable.
The kids probably do respond to him... then they go home and their mom cooks dinner... they don't have a grown perspective yet... thus they are kids.
To answer other posts.. Denver had enough talent to win a championship.. Jordan and Mello... Kobe and Mello... Magic and Mello would have given it a good run. AI to me showed how much he dominated the ball and had poor shot selection when he played there. In Philly, he was probably asked to take 50 shots a game... I don't know what the coach wanted from him. I do know he and Brown had--- what do they call them.... "differences of opinion."
Chauncey for AI..... I'll take the deal for Billups every time because he is coachable and knows how to win.
poor little alice iverson , pitiful little bitch .
HOME TOWN IN PHILLY, WE LOVE A PERSON WITH THE HEART OF A LION, AI COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WHAT FOLKS THINK ABOUT HIM, HE'S LOVE IN PHILLY BECASUE HE'S REAL, ALWAYS APPROACHABLE , ON THE STREETS IN PHILLY, WHILE WARMING UP BEFORE A GAME. NOT A WHINNER LIKE KOBE
You made a typo, it's Winner no H. Kobe has the championship again.
Iverson`s down year last season was still about as good as Jameer Nelson`s, and young Jameer was wrongly picked an all star. I don`t like the prissy sissy, I version of Allen, but he`s always been a solid little guard, despite his style, only overrated when he was named mvp instead of Shaq, etc., and he was underrated when he was left off one Olympic team. A poor shooter, who shot an awful lot, shooting his teams out of games, but it is management`s fault if they reward that. Even mediocre big men usually shoot a much better percentage than guards, and should therefore be gotten the ball more than they do. Flashy to a basketball fan should be playing well, instead of mistaking styling for quality production. 70, 60, even 50 percent from the field beats 45 or 40. Wilt averaged 72.7 from the field his 14th year. Rumor is Miami wants Iverson. If Riley admits Iverson is still starter material, near all star material, maybe other teams will come around. He is the only little man in the top ten in scoring average in nba history. He should be given legit opportunity to shoot his way out of the top ten, he isn`t top ten quality, like he was wrongly given the opportunity to shoot his way in. Better athletes than him, like Kareem, Karl, and Peter Maravich, have shot their way out of the top ten, like Shaq is doing now. Standards for lots of stats should be upped. 10,000 points is no longer a high enough minimum to judge top scoring averages all time. It should be maybe 25,000. Guys play longer now, have more teams diluting the talent pool, and get 3 points instead of two now, for outside shots, so scoring has been inflated. Iverson is not as great as some have sometimes claimed, but is still a good little man, on court.
dont be fooled by this colored boys act. he is now and always has been for himself. He is another clored athlete that should be in jail for gun charges, but shockingly the charges were dropped. He is a joke
