Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! has a whopper: Miami is apparently desperately trying to trade for Carlos Boozer and trying to sign Lamar Odom away from the Lakers. Incumbent power forward Udonis Haslem is included in the Boozer trade rumor, which leads one to believe Boozer and Odom would both start under such a scenario, with Michael Beasley serving as either the top small forward or the first big man off the bench.Whatever way it shakes, such a set of moves would immediately vault Miami into contention for the contested Eastern crown.
Miami basically had two above-average players last season: Dwyane Wade, who remained a dark horse MVP candidate for LeBron deniers well into the spring, and Beasley, a precocious rookie who accepted his Erik Spoelstra-issued lumps and kept spirits high 'til the very end. Haslem is a good player -- a solid defensive rebounder, quality defender and sufficient shot-maker. But his offense is miscast in the Wade-dominated style currently employed by the Heat, and given Miami's insistence on going after every steal, his halfcourt defensive prowess is oft wasted.
Boozer, when healthy, is a great player. He's better than a solid rebounder: he's one of the best in the game. He's a terrific scorer, both potent and efficient. His post defense is questionable. But again, Miami relies on the quick hands of Wade and Mario Chalmers and perimeter pressure. They could use a shotblocker to help out, and they do have Jermaine O'Neal on the roster, but the benefits of Boozer's offense and rebounding would outweigh his deficiencies by far.
The Odom addition -- Woj reports Miami can offer $34 million over five years, which is $2 million less and one season more than what L.A. has offered, which makes no sense to me, but which I suppose theoretically makes some sense in that players do irrational things when their incumbent employer is perceived to be undervaluing their contribution to said team's success -- would likely bump Beasley to small forward, which is his most natural position in my estimation. As Chalmers is young and more of a shooter than a passer, Odom's point-forward skills would be a boon to the Miami offense. Though woefully inefficient early in his career, once surrounded by great talent (I think Wade and Boozer would apply as such) Odom has become much less wasteful of possessions, and his defense has certainly improved over time. He would be an upgrade over Haslem (while making less money) without question.
So Boozer serves as a huge upgrade at center, J.O. becomes one of the best back-up centers in the league, Odom serves as an upgrade at the four, and Beasley fills a glaring hole at the three. All that added to one of the top three players in the NBA. I could live with that. And I think said top-three player could live with that. I find it hard to believe that the East's fifth-best team last season wouldn't take those upgrades on a wild ride into the top-3 in the East. Orlando looks like the class of the conference (though the loss of Hedo Turkoglu is a rather large question mark), and Boston and Cleveland ain't going anywhere (especially given the Celtics' acquisition of Rasheed Wallace and Cleveland's possession of LeBron James). But Miami would be in that conversation if Pat Riley can pull this off. Wish him luck, for all our sakes.

Agreed! All this hoopla. He'll come to his senses and sign w/the Lakers again. Boozer is another story. Utah wants him out.

I'm making a lot of this up, so if I'm way off here, I apologize, but...
There's no state income tax in Florida and Cali has the highest income tax of any NBA state (Hawaii's the only non-NBA state with higher), so I believe that that $2 million figure doesn't fully represent take-home pay.
I believe NBA players are taxed based on games played in each state, and Texas (3 teams) and Tennessee (Memphis) also have no income tax as relevant here, so LO would get this many extra tax-free work days:
+41 home games in MIA
-1 away game in MIA
+4 away games in ORL
-1 away game in ORL
-4 away games in HOU
+1 away game in HOU
-4 away games in DAL
+1 away game in DAL
-4 away games in SA
+1 away games in SA
-4 away games in MEM
+1 away games in MEM
for +31 addition games of tax-free play. Not all of his pay would be doled out solely on a per-game basis (any signing bonus, incentives, etc. would all affect this), but to keep it simple, 31/82=~37.8%. 37.8% of $34 million is about $12.85 million.
Like I said, I'm no NBA pay expert so a lot of this could be very, very off. But even outside of personal resentment, there may fiscal reasons for LO to head to Miami.

If the LAKERS trade Odom, SO WHAT. He plays when he wants to, everone knows that. It's like SHAQ, do what you want to do and choose when to do it. I think he'll sign if he knows what's good for him.

And of course now I realize that my math implies California income tax is 100%, I ignored all the games played in not-Laker CA, and there are only 2 away games against any other team.
I'll step away from the calculator now...

Dave,
After reading your calculations, it sounds like you are ready for a job with the Obama economic team. It seems as though you are coming from the same school of economics that gave us the stimulus package.

The heat are offering less and for one more year because he's gonna live in Miami, FL (no state taxes)= making that contract worth more than LA's

Once again you have a player on the verge of making a bad decision, based on ego. Defending champion for similar money in L.A., in a recession, and Lamar is playing games. If he goes to Miami, cool, he'll find out real fast how well he had it and how quickly the lakers will find some young athletic, cheap guy, kinda like Trevor Ariza who can fill his spot, salivating to play on the Lakers. Maybe not able to do everything he did, but sometimes this comes down to desire, commitment and effort. Lamar is an exceptionally talented individual. But he takes games off effort wise, a luxury you have with the talented Lakers. Put him in a system where he has to produce every game, and he's going to have problems. Hate to see you go Lamar, but if 10 mil a year is'nt enough, bye bye.

The only year where you didn't notice Lamar taking games off was his one year in Miami where he was asked to be one of the main starting players. I think under Riley again he would step up and play; I know he isn't the coach anymore but he's still involved and would have an impact on his performance.

In the article you mention that the offer the Heat are making for Odom is one year more and for less money than the Lakers which is true, but, the reason why it all pretty much balances out to nearly the same offer for the longevity he prefers is you forget Florida doesn't have a state income tax which means that less money taken away in taxes then in LA. The same goes for the possibility of playing in
Texas. So I can understand why he would take that deal when this is the case.

Staring Line Up: C Odom PF Boozer SF Beasley SG Wade PG Chalmers Now that's a dream team right there that could compete with the top teams of the eastern conference...Now were just dreaming here but that would be really nice, I see one of the two coming to Miami...Boozer does live in Miami and Odom/Riles/Wade really get along...So there is some upper hand right now...

A basketball story not about Rich Jefferson`s private life instead of basketball. I`m swhocked! As for Odom, he wasn`t offered $10, that was what he offered to accept, a $2 mil a year pay cut. He was offered 8, then maybe 9, but for fewer years, and those offers are now gone. LA has NO offers for him at the moment. For Miami to get him, they would probably need to get rid of another contract or two so they could up their offer. Odom might be a better high post passing center than Booz, he`s an inch taller, but even in this shrinking nba, both are a bit too small for preference at center. And there are other options. Memphis drafted Thabeet, which may make Gasol expnedable, for Haslem and Chalmers, or less. So far teams have been clearing a path for Cleveland to win the championship, though they still need to try to add some front court 3 pt. shooters, like Matt Bonner, not a free agent, and/or Linas Kleiza, because James is a very productive player, but not a good long range shooter, and even worse from mid range.

Mr. Warren, I`m not sure, but I think someone named Ke(i)she Nichols might be a free agent. She`s some kind of all star candidate small forward, or something, to judge by how many nba comments there are about her. Didn`t know the Spurs had signed a woman to pair with Jefferson. But apparently she`s hot stuff in the estimation of lots of folks, in one way or another. Oh, she`s a cheerleader? Dancer/cheerleader for the Hoboken/Brooklyn/NewArk/where next?/etc., Nets? Ah. Dancers tend to look much better than basketball players, maybe that is why folks think she`s hot. (J/K) With the two heaviest, strongest, all star center candidates in the east, if Odom or Booz are going to play center, it ought to be in the Yao-less west, against Pau Gasol, Nowitzski, Duncan, maybe even Stoudamire if Phoenix goes back to losing with small ball.

Lets take a minute to examine the paid professional that is Lamar Odom.
He attended 3 different high school to play ball, okay no smoking gun there, he went to UNLV where he received cash payments which got the coach fired the team placed on probation and than saw him leave and go to Rhode Island.
He sat out a season per NCAA rules played one season and than left for the NBA.
He was suspended by the NBA for testing positive to dope twice in less than a year, but hey he was on the Clippers so you can sorta excuse that.
He had a real nice season in Miami before being traded to the Lakers.
His first two years in LA were nothing great and his last two years he's been wonderful helping the team to the finals twice and really stepping up when others, namely Bynum, went down with injury.
But he never made the all-star team once in those 4 years and that says a lot about a guy who had a 5 year 65 million dollar contract.
A guy making 13 mill per should be an all-star, and he can only still to this day go to his left.
All that being said we Lakers fans and all Angelenos have grown to love Lamar but dude you said earlier in the year that you would have to take a pay cut and you were okay with that,
What happened?
You've found happiness in LA on and off the court, your kids are happy and now you're gonna throw all that away?
Hey, maybe we hardly knew ye.
