For Now, Mullin Enjoying Slow Lane

Chris Mullin, whose last day as vice president of basketball operations for the Warriors was on June 30, is going to work again. Someone out there is likely to hire him, either as a VP, a general manager, a director of player personnel or some such position where his basketball expertise will come into play.

But don't be surprised if it doesn't happen for a little while. These days Mullin has the look of a man who is truly relishing his time away from the game and the stresses that come with a front office job.

"Things are going very good," Mullin said after a morning of pickup basketball in the East Bay. "Very good. Things are going a lot better than they were going three months ago, that's for sure."

Three months ago Mullin was staring at the writing on the wall, and what it said was he had no future with the Warriors. Truth be told, he knew that early in the season, when the Warriors decided to extend coach Don Nelson's contract but not Mullin's.

Long story short, among the high-powered trio of president Robert Rowell, Nelson and Mullin, it was Mullin who got shoved aside.

There have been scattered reports of tension between Mullin and Rowell and a falling out between Mullin and Nelson. There's a lot of truth to those, no doubt. But Mullin's not going to be the one to shed any light on that stuff.

"Yeah, what would be the point of doing that?" Mullin responded when asked to elaborate on the falling out with Golden State. "It's tough for me to see what good could come of that. There's really no need to do that. Why?"

Mullin is mostly in Northern California these days, making trips back east here and there. For the most part, he's doing what most dads of four would be doing -- picking up, dropping off and spending time with the family.

Mullin has had a few calls but nothing that has taken hold. There's always the question of whether or not he'll end up in New York, working with Donnie Walsh, a man Mullin likes and respects. So, is there anything there?

"Not really," Mullin said. "I'm just laying low right now. Just trying to enjoy this time away from all that other stuff."

Surely Mullin will get back into "that other stuff." Meantime, he's good for now.
