We're at the point where casual fans fail to recognize the remaining names on the free-agency list. There are a few diamonds in the rough, though. Jamario Moon is one of the few remaining gems. Or at least shiny pebbles. And the Cavs think he would look gold next to their two giant hunks of rock.
The Cavaliers signed Moon to a two-year deal on Friday, ESPN reported Sunday.
Moon, 29, but only a three-year veteran in the NBA, represents a unique opportunity still left on the market. While his numbers (7.1 ppg, 4.5 rebounds) aren't anything to set one's eyes ablaze, he does bring with him tremendous athleticism, work ethic and a fan-friendly ability to, as the kids say, jam.
The Cavs' offer to Moon continues what has already been a big summer for them, as they've jettisoned Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to get the Big Witness, and have been involved in a discussion with multiple teams for different offers.
Moon provides a departure from Mike Brown's usual assortment of veteran shooters at the small forward position towards what seems to be a new NBA standard. Long, athletic defenders that can get out in transition. It also provides more flexibility for the Cavs to use LeBron James at power forward, and provides an athletic interjection off the bench.
Miami has seven days to match the offer for Moon. That decision will likely hinge on whether the Heat's pitch for Lamar Odom to "come home" works or not. If successful, the Cavs may have their backup small forward. If the Heat are left dangling as the Lakers re-sign Odom to their already incredibly stacked team, Miami will likely match just to maintain a full roster.
Funny how one decision can impact so many teams. But that's the standard this summer.

Oh Bryan to be so mentally challenged must make each and every single day very difficult for you. I will remember your post next season when he signs the extention. Tell me something Mr. Branless, where else would he go? New York? Not a chance, the system is doomed, offensive minded coaches NEVER win championships. New Jersey, No their far from being a contender. There are a handful of elite teams in this league and Cleveland is one of them and considering the economic situation Mr. James has the best deal there. Read my lips, LBJ stays put.

The Cavs had 2 major weaknesses last year.#1- No presence in the low post.Enter Shaq, problem solved. #2- A weak bench. Rid themselves of corpses like Pavlovic and Ben Wallace, signing Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon is a huge upgrade there. If this team works a trade for a stretch PF,they would be a nightmare for any team to beat. This team is positioned to win now and in the future.James has very little to no incentive to leave Cleveland, and has never even hinted that he might do so.It's rather stupid to even think he would.I mean he would be hung in effigy on every freakin' tree in Ohio and he knows it.And for what? Less money on a non-contending roster? Ridiculous.

Jamario gives them a pretty good option for when LeBron (I mean IF LeBron) sits on the bench. I like this signing, but I don't think it gets them over the hump. Shaq is still a question mark to me. If he brings the same stamina and work ethic that he had last season, then the Cavs'll be that much better. If not, well then it'll just be another body needing to move out of the way for LeBron's drives. Only time'll tell.

Look for the Cavs to make one more move before training camp-the acquisition of a quality stretch PF type. If they are able to accomplish this with the other talent they have picked up then the Lakers need to watch out.
I look for them to sign and trade Wally Sczerbiak and 1-2 of their non guaranteed end of the bench contract players or even Ilgaukskas whose contract expires after this coming season.
