In my beloved state of California, the government is broke. Back in July, out of cash, the state began paying its bills with IOUs: here's a certificate saying we owe you X dollars plus X% interest. But the vendors and whatnot didn't just hang on to the IOUs -- they needed cash! Yet national interest rates are so low that the IOUs actually became a decent investment vehicle, so some parties in California actually sought out the IOUs, and many banks, credit unions and even businesses accept them as readily as they would dollar bills. In a way, the IOUs have become a new form of currency.Quentin Richardson has now been traded four times in seven weeks, the latest to Miami in exchange for Mark Blount. We definitely have a handle on Q's value -- no player has ever had their worth marked so finely. If you wanted to, you could figure out just how many DeSagana Diops or Etan Thomases you could for your Q. In a way, Quentin Richardson has become a new form of currency.
As a reminder, Q was traded around draft day for Darko Milicic. Later, the Clippers took him in exchange for Zach Randolph. The Clips sent him off for a package including Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith and Mark Madsen. And now he's gone off for Blount (who will be bought out by the Wolves, according to Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune).
It's hard to keep straight! How about a Quentin Richardson Official Business and Emoticon Map?

For what it's worth, Pat Riley seems excited about Q, who admittedly is a better player than Blount but makes an extra $1.4 million this season. Depending on how the Miami frontcourt shakes out (especially with regards to where Michael Beasley plays), Richardson could get major minutes as a spot-up three-point shooter next to Dwyane Wade.
Q can still hit threes -- he shot 35% on nearly 1,000 bombs over four Knicks seasons. It's the other type of shot that gives him problems. Over that same time period, he has hit only 40% of his two-point attempts and has an anemic foul rate. So clearly, Q needs to stop venturing inside the arc. Wade will pass the ball out. Jermaine O'Neal won't, and Beasley won't. But Wade will, and Q can help by sinking two or three bombs a game.

Forget about Carmen Sandiego...We can play "Where's in the League is Quentin Richardson?" every week! The answer's rarely the same! He's been passed around more than a baloney sandwich at a 3rd grade lunch table!
Great work, especially in that emoticon #2 captures the way most people feel about Alaska.
Like Wall Street, the NBA has been struck by an epidemic of buy out fever. A different kind of buy out. Paying guys to not play for them. Hey, Nba, I`m available to not play, too! How about a max salary from each team, paying me to not play for them? I have a long beard, I`m short, white, old, no tattoos, no women`s jewelry, everything the nba doesn`t want. And I`d be glad to be paid to not play! Leave it to Richardson to defend against Bryant, Ginobili, Parker (the one with the sister not the actress), and the other big wing guards. Most guys go fishin` anyway, might as well get paid to do it. Maybe the Nfl and Mlb would pay me to not play, too. Worked for Enron, for a while. And I wouldn`t have to break the law, just collect buy outs!
I like the map Mr. Ziller but i have to say im a little dissappointed that you did not include any historical facts as to if this has ever happened before to a player and if not then whats the closest amount of times within the time period Q's trades have happened. I clicked on the article thinking for sure you'd mention if this was the most ever or whatnot and provide a look at that to show just how crazy this. Otherwise good job, and also to everyone -Q can help the Heat, he is in no-way the scrub or throw-in player these trades make him look like.
Holy Crap! This poor guy hardly has time to unpack before he's shipped off again.
it is unfortunate that he was traded so many times, but this guy was never considered a star. He had one good season with the Heat back during the championship year. With guys like Wade and Shaq on the team he was open a lot and was primarily a shot up shooter or 3 point shooter, but never even close to a star.
tsitodawg:
He never played for the Heat. Started with Phoenix and then went to Knicks. Get a clue
Richardson was a big star when he played for DePaul. I think he came into the league two years too soon, though. Not everyone is Kobe Bryant. He's a good person. I wish him well.
Ever notice that AOL is always 2 or 3 days late on a story? Way to give us history headlines instead of news jackasses

Anyone buy a TWOLVE Q jersey?
started out with the Clips didn't he?
Since when was he a star?
Quuuuuuuu! lol
It doesn't matter! nba stands for NO BUSINESS AIRING!...There hasn't been a pro game worth watching since BIRD retired!
Sucks for him, if he was such a great player don't you think someone would want to keep him? Time to retire and find a new profession.
Learn to spell and find a place to post that it will pertain to the subject matter. lier=Liar and coutry=country. idiot

Jill, why would you repost the moronic rantings of an a-hole who is not commenting at all on the story we just read? You both need to grow a brain.
As for this story, has the writer -- Tom Ziller -- ever written a real story for a real news organization before. This was CRAP. I don't give a rat's ass about the economy in California as it pertains to this story. Why did I have to waste my time reading an amazingly long-winded BS first paragraph to get to the (old) news below it? Way to bury the lead, hotshot. Any why do I have to look at the Q map to see that he was traded to Memphis on draft day, since that fact was left out of the story. Are there copy editors there or are we just relying on writers trying to get too cute with old news? Tom, either do better or try retail. It seems like it would be a better fit for you.
This is yet another example of the mindless Right wing mindset. They listen to Right wing radio 24/7, which airs on 1000 stations, dispensing soul-debilitating swill which the gullible and unintelligent slurp up like it was coffee.
John Stuart Mill said it well: "Not all conservatives are stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives," ...which this poster well exemplifies.
What a horrible non-sequitor opening paragraph!
Half of the rambling discourse doesn't make sense.
No surprise.
