Cristal Taylor generated a lot of headlines a few months ago when she was arrested. That's because at the time she claimed (from jail, no less) she was pregnant with Dirk Nowitzki's child. It turned out to be true, apparently, since Nowitzki later filed a court document seeking custody of the unborn child. The likelihood that he will receive custody took a substantial bump today, as Taylor has been sentenced to five years in prison for violating the terms of her probation from a 1999 conviction for forgery and stealing.
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
This morning, Circuit Judge Nancy Schneider ordered the execution of concurrent five-year prison sentences for three felony counts and a one-year jail term for a misdemeanor. It also would seem likely that Taylor will be allowed to leave jail for some period of time in order to deliver the baby -- unless Texas jails just roll with the whole "no compassion whatsoever" style of punishment.
Schneider gave Taylor credit for one year of probation, effectively reducing the sentence to four years. Matthew Fry, Taylor's attorney, said his client also will receive credit for more than 100 days she spent in jail waiting for the case to be resolved.
Those two factors -- the pregnancy and the already accrued jail time -- actually make this stint in the joint relatively shorter than it sounds; Taylor will end up serving less time than required. Still though, it's another odd twist in a really, really bizarre story.

I think all we know so far about paternity is Dirk saw a fetus being carried by a woman who was headed for maybe 5 years in jail, and decided to offer to care for it, regadless of who the mother, much less father, was. Much as he takes personal responsibility to rebound and defend inside and score outside. He saw a job which needed to be done which he felt he could do. Ask Shaq if some men feel that way about kids which aren`t their own, like Sarge took care of him. I don`t fault Shaq`s dad for not being there, maybe Shaq`s mom didn`t allow him to be, but Sarge raised a flawed boy, and in most ways, he`s turned out well enough Sarge probably feels like Shaq is his own son, though he isn`t. I expect Dirk will try to raise this kid well, regardless who the parents were, and I hope he succeeds. On court, he needs maybe Akeem Olajuwon coaching him, his low post game is not at all poised. And despite international athletes usually being like Dirk, Akeem always had a pretty good game, on both ends of the court. I wish Dirk and the messed up lady and her kid well.

Of course he doesn`t, that is the point, he should try to learn to play more like him. Can`t get better by staying the same. If that sounds doumb, then don`t try to get better.

And I was proven right when I said we didn`t know the baby was Dirk`s. Turned out, there was NO baby, so no one was the father. Nor do we know that Dirk had sex with that woman. Though if he did, I hope they both enjoyed it. We do not know the woman lied either, she may have had false pregnancy symptoms. But there is no record of an abortion, so she was probably never pregnant. Just probably. And despite the fact she is in jail, probably deservingly, I still wish her and Dirk, sepeately, well.
