Dirk Nowitzki's Ex-Fiancee Gets 5 Years in Jail for Probation Violation

Cristal TaylorCristal Taylor generated a lot of headlines a few months ago when she was arrested. That's because at the time she claimed (from jail, no less) she was pregnant with Dirk Nowitzki's child. It turned out to be true, apparently, since Nowitzki later filed a court document seeking custody of the unborn child.

The likelihood that he will receive custody took a substantial bump today, as Taylor has been sentenced to five years in prison for violating the terms of her probation from a 1999 conviction for forgery and stealing.

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
This morning, Circuit Judge Nancy Schneider ordered the execution of concurrent five-year prison sentences for three felony counts and a one-year jail term for a misdemeanor.

Schneider gave Taylor credit for one year of probation, effectively reducing the sentence to four years. Matthew Fry, Taylor's attorney, said his client also will receive credit for more than 100 days she spent in jail waiting for the case to be resolved.
It also would seem likely that Taylor will be allowed to leave jail for some period of time in order to deliver the baby -- unless Texas jails just roll with the whole "no compassion whatsoever" style of punishment.

Those two factors -- the pregnancy and the already accrued jail time -- actually make this stint in the joint relatively shorter than it sounds; Taylor will end up serving less time than required. Still though, it's another odd twist in a really, really bizarre story.
