Come 2011 or 2012, the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to have a hell of a rotation at point guard.Everybody's favorite new maverick GM, David Kahn, got over Ricky Rubio's rebuff in a hurry and went out and signed restricted free agent Ramon Sessions to a four-year, $16 million offer sheet, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Sessions, who played in Milwaukee last season, has been hanging out there all summer, drawing interest from a number of teams but never quite receiving that elusive offer. Until, that is, Rubio did his number on the Timberwolves.
The Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks had been making overtures to Sessions much of the offseason. But after Kahn failed in his bid to lure Rubio over from Europe, he turned his attention to Sessions and turned it there with urgency.
"It came up kind of fast," Sessions' agent, Chubby Wells, said. "We were working on a couple of other things, but we weren't going to wait around."
The Bucks are not expecting to match the offer; if they do, they're looking at luxury tax implications. The Bucks are also sitting with rookie point guard Brandon Jennings, Luke Ridnour and Roko Ukic.
Sessions has a player option on the fourth year of the deal, which could be right around the time Rubio decides to come over. Rubio is certain to not play in the NBA for at least two years, but there also seems to be significant financial incentive for him to wait three years.
That kind of uncertainy forced Kahn to seek out Sessions, who will take much of the point guard pressure off rookie Jonny Flynn.Kahn took a lot of heat for drafting two point guards -- Rubio and Flynn -- with the No. 5 and No. 6 picks, respectively, in the June draft, but has maintained all along that those two players could play together.
Maybe so. But the next question might be: Can Flynn, Rubio and Sessions play together in a three-guard rotation?
