The hardwood will be replaced by the red carpet when Michael Jordan and four others are inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight in Springfield, Mass.
Jordan, perhaps the greatest player to ever play the game, will be honored at the ceremony along with David Robinson, John Stockton and coaches Jerry Sloan and Vivian Springer.
Of course, Jordan's induction is a mere formality. But that doesn't mean it isn't creating more of a buzz than inductions past.
Tomasson: David Thompson on Presenting MJ
One indication of how big tonight's festivities are expected to be is the fact that the venue was changed to allow for a larger crowd. Enshrinements usually take place at the Hall of Fame, itself. Tonight, the event will take place at Springfield's Symphony Hall, which holds close to 3,000.
The evening begins with a Red Carpet show at 5:30 PM ET on NBA TV, followed by the induction ceremony on ESPN at 6:30 PM. Matt Steinmetz will be tweeting during the ceremony -- join the conversation by sending your thoughts to @matt_steinmetz.

I don't think Malone was eligible this time around. And no way was Stockton NOT going in on the first vote. What a great team they were to watch!!

Michael Jordan was a 'portrait in motion' on a bball court. I still miss watching him play. CONGRATS TO HIM for this honor.

What Jordan did will never be equalized, there giving these players money before they proved anything, that has ruined the game and it's going to hurt some other sports. We will see alot of empty seats at most games.

Stringer has been at the top for years as a woman's basketball coach. She has taken many teams to the final 4 and has been the linchpin to Rutgers' women's resurgence in the sport. Its too bad people don't watch women's college basketball more; its very exciting.

Michael Jordan’s Hall of Fame speech is still the biggest topic in basketball. And for the most part, the reviews were not positive. It really amazes me.

Jordan has always admitted he was the class clown. The media wanted him to be redundant, a taller version of Obama or Martin Luther King, or whomever. That just isn`t Jordan. I don`t have a television, so I think I may have been misled at first what his speech was like. One commentor compared it to a Friar`s Club roast, the kind of comedy Dean Martin used to host on tv, and I think it was probably more humorous and less vindictive than the media portrayed it. No reason he should have to be King or Obama. Pro basketball star, not pro comedy star, he should start assembling better athletes for the BobCats, and leave out the public Don Rickles impersonations, and then he`ll probably do fine. Rickles used to say, I kid because I love, and maybe that`s how Jordan hoped he came across, too, but, as with Rickles, it apparently went over better with some folks than others.

yeah... great speech or not... it cannot take away the legacy that MJ created with his game. Yeah.. he may not have a great speech but... like what they always say... "action speaks louder than words!!" He will still be remembered as the greatest player every to play the game. Until someone actually got 6 championship rings, 6 finals MVP, 5 NBA MVP, 2 Olympic gold medals, 10 scoring titles and more... :)
You don't need a great speech to get those awards!! ;)
hey.. just my 2 cents!!!
