Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been on camera a lot in his life: from the basketball court on over to the Airplane movies, he's not camera shy. Of course, despite his talents and high standing on the hardwood, he typically plays a "less than brilliant" character in other genres of "film." Perhaps this clip from Jeopardy, via In Game Now, explains why that is. Or perhaps it just points to his ego. Or id. Or whatever.
Now, it seems a touch unfair to Kareem to simply laugh at him and point and go "bwahahahahahahaha." Why? Well, the category was "I went to UCLA" and the quote used in that clue was originally said by Abdul-Jabbar. But dude, the Trailblazers? When you see "Trailblazers" + "UCLA" you know automatically that the answer is "Bill Walton." Or "Trailblazers" + "Stoned-Out Hipster" if you prefer, but it should have been obvious anyway.

It seems media and fans will never give Jabbar a break, and it's all because he never kissed anyones butt. I'm probably in the minority when I say athletes have the right to privacy just like anyone else. All I require as a fan is that they give maximum effort on the court/field. Patrick Ewing gets the same raw deal from media and so-called fans, but to me the great thing is that they don't give a damn if you ridicule them or not.
this will be redone on Family Guy...
You may be in the minority on this, but you are 100% right on this, too. I don`t check terms of other folks` contracts. If I see an article with LOTS of comments, I know it is probably exploiting racism, and responded to largely by racists. I don`t need that. I used to be such an avid fan, I would make up several rounds of mock draft from college scouting report mags, trying to better understand to TO look for, and what NOT to look for. Publicity is often simply made up, anyway. I used to know folks personally who were hyped. I knew, for example, one time, a man was reported to have meet a man and a woman for lunch, left with the woman and committed adultery with her. I was there. I helped set up the lunch. I was with the married guy when the other two showed up. Yeah, the woman left with him. But then the other guy and I met them in the parking lot. The married guy left with the other man, not the woman. I left with the woman! No sex. I was just sort of like the child she`d never had. But the media wants lives to be full of things THEY consider exciting, but might never do themselves. Just one of many examples I could mention, and I could titilate folks with the big names involved. But private lives are private business. And all three of them are long dead, they couldn`t dispute me if they wanted to. This was probably a publicity stunt. Of course Kareem has heard, too death, of Bill Walton. Great university player, not as great as Kareem, good pro player, not as great as Kareem, but best white center in Ucla history. And the media constantly sticks with that racism, blacks vs. whites. A shame. I only follow the nba, not the rest of the media, and only on the Net, though I`ve watch pro games in person in the past, and on tv alot, my expertise on contemporary basketball is fading. But I don`t follow the nba so I can tell folks they are ignorant, sound dumb, are on crack (as if they don`t knwo whether they are or not), or the various other things I have been told. Folks have a right to be wrong, and if the disagree with me about the Nba, sooner or later they may begin to realize it is one of the few things I know a little something about. Both Kareem and Bill are intelligent men, Bill attended graduate school, Kareem completed it. Both are hard working. Kareem`s mainly health problem has been migranes, which have contribute to violent reactions when physcially attacked. Bill`s had more health problems, most obviously his osteoporosis, "old woman`s diesease", brittle bones, and a speech impediment he has basically overcome. Karrem was the second best big man all time, behind Wilt, whom he knew first in Harlem. Bill is the best pro power forward ever out of Ucla, and was a good pro center as well. There is room for both on the same all time Bruins team, along with maybe Sidney Wicks or Keith/Jamaal Wilkes at wing forward, maybe Lucious Allen and Gale Goodrich as the dual point guards coach prefered to dual wing men (or maybe Jamaal/Keith Wilkes at wing guard). The Russ era Celtics also preferred the dual point guards approach. It has gone out of fashion since, generally a big center replacing the small point guards, largely as the result of rules passed trying to undercut Wilt Chamberlain, causing teams to need a second big man to do what one used to be able to do if he was good enough. Kareem not being commissioner, or GM or even head coach is an embarrasment to the league (unless he were too busy as a congressman or whatever), Kareem playing a trivia game is not. Kareem playing flute or sax is a rare treat, he`s a decent musician, among his many other skills. I hope we see more of the aging Mr. Jabbar, not less, in the near future.
SHUT UP!!!
WOW... What?
No, Piper. I will not shut up. Why should I? No one disgreed with a SINGLE thing I said. The complaints were that I "ranted" at length, not that anyone thought any thing I said was wrong. IF I`m right, why shouldn`t I speak up? If you want someone to shut up, YOU do it.
Wow...so what he messed up. It was a friggin trivia game...who cares??? People will pick out any little thing to make an issue out of these days.
Someone hop and get Giles a soap box, his rant was longer than the article
Boy, do you have that right. And you managed to say it with less than 10,000 words.
that,s because you lack the mental vigor to articulate your thoughts the way he did
He just thought the answer would be who gave the quote, not the person spoken about in the quote. Very easy to do under pressure, especially when he is the person quoted. I deal with lots of people every day and they get confused in non-pressure situations. What this clip means is that Kareem is just like everyone else.
Kareem is smart
We have clearance, Clarence.
Does anyone read these long long post?
nope.
Come on!,AOL, Give it a damn break! Can't you people find a REAL piece of gossip? Your stupidity never ceases to amaze me, or your LACK of creativity. Leave old Kareem alone for Christ's sake. The man was trying to gather funds for a good cause charity, and YOU people at AOL take the time to make a mockery out of him! You've sunk to an even LOWER low,Wow. AND, don't EVEN try and pull the the old race-card, Kareem see's NO color when it comes to helping people in need.
If you don't like it, why bother reading AND commenting...?
Kareem was a good center, perhaps top five, but Wilt was the best I ever saw, hands down...had they played together, Wilt would have had his way with Kareem.
Artis Gilmore is your momma.
again, AOL... making something out of nothing... Mr Jabbar obviously misunderstood the point and made a human mistake, then was classy about it; not stupid, not embarrassing.
and to answer the person who said "does anyone even read the long rants".... well, if you had taken the time to read it, you would have seen it was not a "rant", it was a well written informative article, a rarity these days!
