5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Hawks at Celtics, Game 7

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Hawks-Celtics epic game this afternoon.

1. Amazing: How in the world did we get here? This wasn't supposed to happen. I mean, seriously, this wasn't supposed to happen. There's no precedent for this. At least the Warriors last year had favorable matchups and a history of winning. Atlanta was sub .500 and there's not a single man-on-man where you give Atlanta the clear-cut edge, outside of Ray Allen vs. Joe Johnson. The number of ridiculous events in Atlanta, of simply unfathomable playoff moments is staggering. Staggering. You want five things to keep an eye on today? How about four quarters and post-game? This series is

2. Desire: You can talk all you want about free throw discrepancies (which is valid) and a conspiracy to get the Celtics on TV more often (which isn't), but at the end of the day, the Hawks wanted Game 6 more. They fought for every rebound, struggled for every loose ball, played with passion, desire, and focus, and closed out the game with big shots. The Hawks wanted it more. At some point, you have to look at this series and start to wonder if the Celtics spent too much time patting their own backs. And if they come out and play with zero heart, no intensity, and a lack of focus, the Celtics will be the victim of the biggest upset in NBA history. The best thing for the Hawks is that they're playing with house money at this point. They have zero pressure on them. They were supposed to go home a week ago. If they can play with passion and fire, with no pressure, they might be able to create "Where 'An Amazing Upset' Happens." But that idea seems to crumble when you look at the fact that Game 7 is at ...

5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Celtics at Hawks, Game 6

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Celtics-Hawks game tonight.

1. If The Hornets Are Thin, The Hawks Are Transparent: Game 5 Celtics bench points: 35. Game 5 Hawks bench points: 14. Yikes. Zaza Pachulia followed up the tough guy from Game 4 by scoring 2 points in ten minutes with no rebounds. Josh Childress, dunk machine? 5 points in 26 minutes on 2 of 8 shooting, and did I mention he had 4 of his shots blocked? When the team with the amazing starting lineup crushes you with their bench? That's a bad sign, kids. The only way the Hawks can keep up with this team is if they get some level of production off their bench.

2. It's Over When the Big Ticket Says It's Over: Kevin Garnett has pretty much decided he's had enough with the Hawks' fun and games. In the last two games he's scored 40 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 blocks. In Game 5 he was a monster, devouring the Hawks with the kind of lethal intensity we anticipated going into the postseason. The problem with Garnett is that there's really no way to match up with him. You can put Al Horford on him, but Horford's a rookie and Garnett's range is too good. You can put the headbutter on him, but it's only going to make him mad. The Hawks need to let Garnett get his and focus on auxiliary support.

5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Hawks at Celtics

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Hawks-Celtics game tonight.

1. In Which Joe Johnson Tries To Re-Ignite: Joe Johnson was the story in Game 4, scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Hawks to a series tie. For a team that prided itself on being the best defensive team in the league, Atlanta's ISO for Johnson shredded the Celtics time and time again. The key tonight will be to see how the Celtics respond defensively. Gambling with Rajon Rondo on Johnson might not be a bad idea, given Rondo's physical nature and the fact that Mike Bibby has slowly devolved into goo. The size differential is alarming, but Rondo's freakish athleticism could be the neutralizer and besides, it's not like Johnson was going to the post game in Game 4, anyway.

2. And Then Garnett Killed Everyone And The Villagers Rejoiced And Screamed "Go Sawx!": Kevin Garnett has had leadership, manhood, and toughness have been called into question after getting punked by ... wait for it ... Zaza Pachulia. After Garnett used a little bit of his toughness on Pachulia, Pachulia decided to headbutt the Defensive Player of the Year to show he's not afraid of him. Garnett, instead of annihilating Pachulia, for whatever reason, be it smarts or a lack of fortitude, chose to back away, scream, and accidentally shove a referee. Let this be a lesson, kids. Accidentally shoving referees and headbutting superstars is fine, but standing up and walking three feet off the bench is not. Anyway, Garnett is likely to come out roaring, and he needs to, as this team is in desperate need of leadership, and won't be finding it from its coach. I expect Garnett to get ridiculously hot tonight.

The Hawks! Fight On ... With Their Mouths

It is halftime in Atlanta, and it's time for a jinx or two. The Hawks lead Boston 51-48, on the backs of Mike Bibby (18 points on 6 shots), Josh Smith (5 blocks in 13 minutes), and ... Solomon Jones, whom -- I am not ashamed to admit -- I had little idea existed before the 2-minute warning.

Jones shows only a single rebound and a single block in the ledger, but the rebound should have been worth three and the block was a massive one to end the half. Meanwhile for the Celtics, Paul Pierce has decided to be the snarliest jump-shooter ever, and Ray Allen has joined him in hitting some treys. But the C's aren't finishing in the lane ... something they are typically quite good at.

The best part of the game so far? The Hawks are a-yappin'. Zaza Pachulia looking like he's going to punch out Kevin Garnett, Al Horford trying to screen Ray into oblivion, assistant coaches talking about Boston losing its composure. Wild times.

(I really don't mean to jinx this, and several folks (Matt Moore, most vocally) have tried to talk me out of writing this post alerting the non-viewing population of this highly enjoyable fight. But it is my duty as an American to document this.)

5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Celtics at Hawks, Game 4

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Celtics-Hawks game tonight.

1. You Got A Smart Mouth, Kid:
Al Horford actually talked trash to Paul Pierce. A rookie! To Paul Pierce! If you want to keep your eye on something, keep an eye on those two. Now, the obvious thought is that Pierce is going to go out and light up the Hawks like a Christmas tree. But doesn't that seem predictable? You throw in the fact that Pierce hasn't broken 20 points yet and it becomes an interesting question. On the other side, do the Celtics hammer Horford to send a message? Or does Horford go off, fueled by the adrenaline? And if he goes off, at home, with the crowd going nuts, will the rest of the Hawks respond? Unlike Washington-Cleveland and the Bibby lameness, this kind of behavior is actually kind of intriguing. You've got Al Horford, who's not much younger than Josh Smith, vocally and publicly saying "I'm not scared of you." We'll see if his courage holds up tonight.

2. Not To Rouse The Green:
I don't want to invite the hordes of Celtics fans to slog this post with "U R SO WRONG, THE CELTICS ARE AWESOME!" but we might want to discuss just how good this team has been this series. However, I know being up 2-1 after posting the best record in the league probably earns you some credit. So I'm going to point out something alarming for the Celtics, then talk about how awesome they are. Okay? I feel like I'm negotiating with armed madmen, here. Okay, so I know they blew the Hawks out in the first two games. But I feel like it's my duty to inform the Celtics nation that things aren't perfect so far. Of the Boston Big Three, only Kevin Garnett has scored more than 20 points in a game, and that was 32 points in the loss in Game 3. The Celtics are only shooting 2.8% better than the Hawks so far in this series, and the Hawks are hanging with them in rebounds and blocked shots. I'm just saying, this is the 8th seed. Boston needs to play like it, blowouts or no blowouts.

Boston Bandwagon Fans Taunt Mike Bibby

Ah, Mike Bibby. Have you learned nothing from DeShawn Stevenson? Don't get me wrong, I find it very refreshing to hear NBA players call out the opposing team's fans or star player. But if you don't perform after doing so, prepare to feel the wrath of those you taunted. In DeShawn's case it was Damon Jones of all people; in Bibby's case it was the Celtics' fans.

In case it wasn't abundantly clear, that was a chant of "Rondo's better" that rained down from the Celtics' faithful. I'm not sure how much of a burn this really is for Bibby, considering the fans are merely pointing out what has been -- at least in this series -- simply an irrefutable fact.

5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Hawks at Celtics, Game 2

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Hawks-Celtics Game 2 tonight.

1. Hold The Line!: I'm not going to lie to you. The most fascinating part of this game is likely to be the line. Right now it's floating somewhere between 15 and 15.5. This seems about right, but if the Celtics decide to make a statement and leave in the starters, we should probably bump that to about 23.5. For the Hawks, the big question tonight isn't really a win. It would be nice, sure, but so would world peace. The question is if they can land inside single digits with 4 minutes remaining. If they can prove they can make a game of it, that will give them some measure of confidence heading back to Atlanta.

2. Is Mike Bibby Ever Going To Earn His Paycheck?: Bibby was traded to provide an offensive spark and veteran leadership for the Hawks in order to help them in the playoffs. Game 1? 5 points, 2-10 shooting, 1 assist, 2 turnovers. Wow. I knew Rajon Rondo would do a number on him, but I didn't know that number would be 666. If Atlanta is going to have a shot in Hades to get back into this thing, Bibby's going to have to play way above his performance this season.

Bibby: Boston Fans are "Bandwagon Jumpers"

Mike Bibby, the Black Larry David, isn't much of a loudmouth trash-talker. He has some snap in him -- one early-decade annihilation of Charles Barkley and his numerous championship rings stands out -- but he would not be the Hawk you'd expect to pull a DeShawn. But hey! what do I know?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Sekou Smith reports on Bibby's feelings about Boston's buoyant home crowd.
"They were kind of loud at the beginning," he said. "But a lot of these fans are bandwagon jumpers trying to get on this now. I played here last year, too. And I didn't see three fourths of them. They're for the team now and they might get a little rowdy but that's about it." [...]

"[T]hey are fair-weather fans if you ask me."
He's got a bit of a point: Boston was #23 in attendance last year (by ESPN's numbers); they sold out every game this year and were a top road draw. It's hard to blame Boston ... who would voluntarily watch that mess every night but the truly masochistic?

Regardless, expect the Celtic faithful to lay it on The B.L.D. particularly thick Wednesday, which I assure you will be the last time Bibby plays in Boston this year.

5 Things to Keep an Eye on: Hawks at Celtics

In another of our continuing series, five things to keep an eye out for tonight in the Hawks at Celtics game.

1. Garnett: Just "Garnett."Can't really get more obvious than this. His first playoff game with the Celtics. His first game back after what is reported to be the birth of his first child. And a game against what can only be generously described as a slightly outmatched Hawks team. Kevin Garnett has waited his whole life for the next two months. He's had an MVP caliber season, but possibly the quietest MVP caliber season in history. This may be the time when he goes absolutely ballistic.

2. The Singular Advantage: If there's one area where the Hawks have a legitimate advantage in matchups, it may be at Center. Al Horford has shown he can compete on both offense and defense with anyone in the league, and he's got the only weak spot for the Celtics. There are only two issues. One, he's facing a three-headed monster of Kendrick Perkins, Glen Davis, and Leon Powe. And two? He'll probably end up guarding Garnett at some point. But if he can force Garnett's defensive attention away from Josh Smith, that might open things up for the explosive wing man, Smith.

Indy, With 34 Wins and 44 Losses, Stays Alive

Atlanta's opportunity tonight to basically clinch their first playoff berth in roughly 1,400 years came and went without much fanfare -- the Hawks, after all, have looked like a sure playoff team for weeks now. Indiana needed a win over Atlanta tonight to stay alive, and -- hey! -- they got it.

Mike Bibby has heard choirs of angels and flutists since arriving in February, but tonight was a big ole foghorn. Bibby went 0-for-8 with 2 assists in 26 minutes. Bibby's Indy counterpart, Flip Murray, had a bonkers evening with 20 points on 11 shots and 10 assists. (Their salaries are only about $12.7 million apart, though.)

Atlanta's still in strong position for the gift of a first-round execution by Boston playoffs -- the Hawks hold a two-game lead over Indy with four games to go. The Pacers need to win out and watch the Hawks lose to two of the Celtics, Magic, New York and Miami, or go 3-1 and pray the Knicks or Heat can stun Atlanta. (The Nets, 32-45 and idle tonight, are allegedly alive too.)

It's criminal this race is happening while the 46-31 Denver Nuggets and the 46-31 Golden State Warriors have do-or-die games tonight. Time to update the Geneva Conventions, or at least the league rules.
